The issues of grand corruption and wanton theft of devolution and CDF funds by the leadership of Northern Kenya is resonating very well with the poverty ravaged masses of Northern Kenya. In fact this is a game changer! H. E RIGATHI GACHAGUA in his own crude and unsophisticated way has opened the eyes of the masses and shown them their problem is the sole creation of their leaders. If this debate continues on this trajectory, GACHAGUA may in 2027 be invited to the high table by the voters of Northern Kenya who are desperate to be freed from the shackles of the thieving political vampires of the North. Senator, your digression is breathtaking self-serving and escapist. We are in agreement on the historic marginalisation of NFD by successive regimes since 1963. We are also in agreement on the legal and institutional discrimination against the Northern people of Kenya. We all know too well the human rights abuse and underdevelopment that are part of the North's DNA. Few Kenyans know the emergency that was declared in the North that suspended the constitution and the bill of rights in 1963 was lifted only in 1991/92 after Kenya become a multiparty democracy. Our sad and dehumanising history is on record. But the debate and discussion we are having isn't about the history of NFD or the deliberate underdevelopment of the region by successive regimes. The debate and discussion we are having is about endemic corruption and never ending pandemic corruption that plaque and impoverishes the masses and enriches the political elites. In this debate and discussion H.E Rigathi Gachagua is peripheral and secondary. We know too well what tribal chauvinist he is. But, Gachagua is a clever politicians who sees a good entry point to the hearts of the voters in the North and is merely taking advantage of an enticing invitation. And he has a very powerful message. Gachagua is cleverly telling northers that "your problems are your leaders. I know them personally. We politicians are all thieves but those from the North are the worst". Kenya made huge progress since 1992. We have the 2010 constitution that brought about seismic change in many spheres of societal growth and interaction. One such seismic change is best exemplified by devolution. Since 2013 the Northern counties have recived over 1 billion Kenya shillings. All other counties in Kenya have recived similar funds. It's the conventional wisdom in Kenya that governors steal everything(look at Nairobi!). But we have many exceptions like Prof Kibwana and Anyang Nyongo. Northern Kenya is an extreme and cruel case of corruption on industrial scale (the only growth industry in Northern Kenya since 2013 is the exponential growth in UMMRA pilgrims to Mecca. Because of the money stole from the Northern counties umra pilgrims have increased by about 5000% since 2013) For instance, it is universally accepted that during the tenure of Mohamed Abdi as Governor of Wajir btw 2017 to 2022, 90% of budgetary allocation was stolen by his sidekicks and clansmen. @EACCKenya was conveniently made to sleep. Look at Garissa and Marsabit. Despite billions of money poured in these counties, we see no meaningful change in the lives of the people of Garissa and Marsabit. It is indisputable that Leaders and their sidekicks have privatised public funds, and no one is holding them to account. So, Senator, please don't blame Hon. Gachagua for telling you the painful and inconvenient truth. Blame your brethren/kinsmen in the North and tell them to stop their thieving enterprises. The citizenry are tired. The citizenry deserve better.
FCPA Billow Kerrow@BillowKerrow

This is misplaced. First, Devolution funds that have gone to 5 counties in the North are about a half of the 1 trillion bandied around. CDF has been used in the region to put up hundreds of schools which were largely non-existent before. Its fair to say nearly 90% of the schools were built after CDF came. Education isn't a county function. County govts in the region however continue to support schools in several ways, including bursaries. Many hospitals have been built by the counties. The challenge is poor mgt & lack of adequate drugs, same in most counties. The fact being glossed over is that the region is entirely dependent on devolved funds, with little from National Government that retains 85% of the nation's budget. Its the reason the region lacks tarmac roads, power connection to the national grid, water supply in major towns, National schools, major hospitals, etc. Regarding corruption, it's the case of the pot calling the kettle black. Rigathi & co are no less corrupt. It's pervasive in the entire piblic service. To suggest all Somali investments in Nairobi is from the county loot is preposterous, disingenuous. And SC knows that. With development of infrastructure in the area & improved security, folks from the area, incl SC, will likely be resident there.

October 15, 2025 {For Immediate Release} CONDOLENCE MESSAGE FOLLOWING THE PASSING ON OF RT HON. RAILA AMOLO ODINGA, EGH, SECOND PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA. I received the devastating news of the death of the Second Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya and my dear brother, Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga this morning, upon my arrival at Heathrow International Airport, London, United Kingdom where I am on a scheduled 10-day programme. Rt Hon Odinga, fondly referred to for decades as ‘Baba’ by his ardent supporters, family and friends, and, albeit begrudging in admiration by his most-fiercest detractors, was more than an enigma. Baba was a force of nature that kept on going and going, despite and in spite of the hurdles put in front of him. Baba was the longest suffering political detainee in Kenya. At the heart of the struggle for multipartyism, Raila’s body bore the scars of the slings and arrows, bullets and batons, that no man or woman should ever endure. Yet, at each point of release from the detention cells and torture chambers, he would raise his arms up to the heavens, his fist clenched in determination; resolved that the tears and painful scars he personally suffered, would yield to democracy and freedom for his beloved Kenya. That is why we call him the Champion of the Second Political Liberation. Baba’s physical and mental struggle for Kenya - well documented nationally and internationally - earned him the title ‘Agwambo’. In the years I interacted with Agwambo professionally in Kenya’s political space, I got to understand why he was referred to as that. From the Opposition benches to the Government side as Prime Minister, to August 27, 2010, the day our New Constitution was promulgated, my brother Raila, played an instrumental and integral role in devolving power from an imperial presidency to a people’s centred constitutional order. For that, we owe him our immense gratitude.   Since 2013, I had the singular privilege of working very closely and passionately with my brother, twice as his running mate both in CORD and NASA, as well as his partner in the Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Coalition. We learnt a lot from each other, and, shared a lot of pain together. To Mama Ida, and the entire family, in particular Rosemary, Raila Junior and Winne, as much as I cannot imagine the shock and the heartbreak that you are currently going through, I want you to know that my family and I stand in solidarity with you. In this regard, I know that all Kenyans are praying for you. Kenya has lost an exemplary leader, the President who won but was never declared and sworn into office. The loss of Rt Hon Raila Odinga is not only a loss to his family and country, but also to the entire African continent. I will miss my brother and friend dearly.   I am therefore rearranging my schedule of engagements in the United Kingdom in honour of my fallen brother. May God rest the soul of Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in everlasting peace. HE Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, EGH, SC, CS. Tenth Vice President of the Republic of Kenya, Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) Party Leader.

2 issues are key here: - Reliability: Handling massive concurrent requests - Fairness What I would consider: - Queue based admission system to control how many requests the system is serving - 10-minute reservation windows with automatic release. Would even go as far as an SMS alert to let you know, you are n persons to the top: have payment ready! - CAPTCHA integration (include 3rd parties such as Cloud Flare) for anti-bot measures - Caching for both application and database levels - Idempotency to prevent duplicate charges - Failover mechanisms especially for payment gateways (...the list can go on an on. Key thing is to answer What, Why (tradeoffs included) and How.

You have been contracted to design an event management system for a client who has won a bid to sell tickets for one of the largest football leagues in Africa. The ticketing system is scheduled to go live at 12:00 PM, with only 27,000 tickets available. The launch announcement has already been broadcasted live across major media outlets in a country with a population exceeding 50 million people. How would you design and architect this system to handle the massive demand, ensure fairness, prevent failures, and deliver a smooth user experience?

@_lennoxomondi Use a virtual waiting room to handle the traffic surge, admit users in waves for fairness, reserve tickets for a few mins before payment, use idempotent webhooks to avoid double charges, autoscale servers, protect against bots, and monitor everything in real time.

@_lennoxomondi Yes, a waiting room is a queue, but implemented at the edge (CDN layer or 3rd-party service like Queue-it), before requests hit origin. Why? It protects the core APIs from stampede traffic. We don’t need all 1M to buy only fairness + stability matter.

@_lennoxomondi Building this internally is possible, but a proven 3rd-party tool is safer for such a high-stakes launch.

@_lennoxomondi Users get randomized admission in small batches (say 1–2k/min), and once admitted, they get a timed reservation window. This way the system never overloads, and inventory is sold without oversell or crashes.

The waiting room should be positioned as early as possible in the user journey ideally at the edge, acting as a buffer between the user and the origin servers. This means it's not deeply integrated into the core backend but rather sits in front of it, intercepting requests before they reach your main application logic kama., event browsing, seat selection, or checkout).
