It seems a lot of people think the recent AES+ will cause original Neo Geo game prices to drop. You can tell just by looking at the comments on my latest post. But I see it a bit differently. For example, the PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition is functionally identical, yet it carries a completely different value compared to the standard PS5 Pro because of its rarity. Beyond price, I think the space of playing games and the space of collecting limited editions are entirely separate. A long time ago, there was an MSX computer released by Daewoo Electronics in Korea. It was produced in small quantities and traded at high prices. But years later, a large batch was discovered in an old warehouse, which diluted its rarity and caused prices to drop. Like that case, unless a large hidden stock of original Neo Geo games suddenly appears, I don’t think their value will drop easily—no matter how many remake. This isn’t just because I collect Neo Geo games. It’s the same logic as how, even if Nintendo remakes Super Mario Bros., it’s hard to imagine the price of new condition first-print copy—once sold for millions—suddenly dropping.

@gamer_lafan NCI reproductions of titles rereleased probably will fall in value. But titles which can’t be rereleased due to licensing issues might still be in demand.

@gamer_lafan Personally I think the lower value games will raise in price in the short term due to new AES+ owners looking to get more games to play which are not/yet rereleased. The high dollar games I think will stay stable in price or might increase due to very limited stock anyway.

The MiSTER Pi / SUPER5 tariff rate dropped from 20% to 10%. Retro handhelds dropped from 145% to 10%.
