@NavalInstitute I remember reading about this in a book titled "Pig Boats", about the US Submarines in WW2. IIRC the pilot was also injured in the hand but still clung on to the periscope. I wish there was a reprint of that book. Fun read.

When USS Finback (SS-230) was sent to rescue a downed Hellcat pilot in a raft near Haha Jima in 1944, the submarine was unable to surface without being exposed to nearby Japanese shore batteries. After the pilot was able to grab hold of the periscope, the Finback dragged him for several miles until it was safe to surface and bring him aboard. #SubSunday
