🇭🇺 Judit Polgar: “Classical chess is going through a difficult time”
In an interview with Firstpost, Judit Polgar spoke about classical chess, faster formats, and the future of the Chess Olympiad:
“I think classical games are going through a difficult time in some sense because the pace of life has accelerated in every area.
It is quite obvious that rapid chess is more attractive to the strongest players, perhaps not only to Magnus, but also to others.
And I really believe rapid chess can be just as competitive. It can even be more interesting for spectators.
For example, the Chess Olympiad is currently played in a classical format and lasts two weeks.
I firmly believe that, for many reasons, it would make much more sense to hold it in just one week and with shorter time controls.”

Played against 1500 in an English (1.c4) as Black in a blitz game.
Used basic ideas:
1. Develop quickly
2. Control the center
3. Trade when ahead
I usually don’t need to find the best moves, but I try to find good enough moves.

Top players like him face enormous pressure, and he’s still so young.
His contributions to France have already been immense.
I’d certainly be happy to see him in the UK, with no strings attached.

Un grand merci à @AlirezaFirouzja pour cette partie d’échecs ! C'est fou d'avoir pu jouer le numéro 1 français, ancien numéro 2 mondial et aussi celui qui a été le plus jeune joueur de tous les temps à avoir franchi la barre mythique des 2800 Elo ! J'ai toujours suivi avec énormément d'admiration ses exploits et toute la magie qu'il arrivait à créer sur l'échiquier : que ce soit par équipes quand il a amené la France vice-championne d'Europe en 2021, ou encore en individuel, lui qui est encore l'un des rares qui peut encore tenir tête à Magnus Carlsen, comme on l'a vu à la récente Coupe du Monde esport il y a quelques mois. J'ai pu partager un moment privilégié avec lui en lui rendant visite quelques jours à Chartres, et même si sur un échiquier il ne fera qu'une bouchée de vous, je peux vous dire que dans la vie il est extrêmement chaleureux et gentil ! J’étais très impressionné (et un peu beaucoup stressé) avant notre rencontre, alors un grand merci à lui pour sa bienveillance durant tout notre entretien ! 🙏

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was a decision from the French Federation (not Alireza's décision) to exclude him from representing France.
Which I find a pity, on a purely chess point of view.
As PHN said, France could have a top golden team.

@richeck72 Besides that, Alireza barely plays classical, so let’s don’t pretend we’re all shocked he doesn’t care about a 5.000€ for 2 weeks of chess.

What a waste ...
Such a fantastic player. Even though it might remind some other player's behavior (eg Fischer), I don't think you can get rid of such a talent.
That's just my own opinion ofc.
