@josiahhughes the house itself being quaint and humble does a lot to balance this. I don’t think I would have ever watched the show if it was a new building with floor-to-ceiling windows (the Mr Beast approach), too game showey

@BroBonds88416 @robertflorence You're acting like it's a scripted US Tv show they're remaking? It's just a format. It obviously won't be trying to do 'American comedy'. If anything sketch comedy has a stronger tradition over here.

@robertflorence This is doomed to fail. SNL is such an huge institution in the US that just giving a UK version that label puts a huge burden on it, which I doubt these brave youngsters can live up to. And American comedy is not the same as British comedy. It just isn't. Poisoned chalice...

I can’t stress this enough, as they say on the internet. I’ve worked in telly comedy for almost 30 years of my life. A VETERAN. There is nothing harder, in the telly game, than getting a new comedy show off the ground. The reaction to a snippet of that new show, or a promo for it, is almost always wildly negative. Comedy always begins from a position of fighting up out of a trench into a hostile no-man’s-land. Bombs of “THIS WILL BE SHIT” landing all around you. How often have you heard about a drama show - “It gets great five episodes in.” When have you ever heard anyone EVER say that about comedy? You get one episode AT BEST. Usually, you get about ten minutes. Sometimes one look at your face is enough for people. Basically, what I’m saying is - give telly comedy a chance! Don’t go in, all arms folded and grumpy. Most shows you see on TV are people reading off teleprompters and actors turning up to recite memorised lines. These comedy performers and writers will have been working like fuck to make you laugh. There is no harder working room in telly than that comedy room. So PLEASE. Relax, be open, and give this and ANY OTHER NEW COMEDY a chance. It is only here to try to make you smile. Clip here is fun. Godspeed to all involved!

@robertflorence I was pleased when they announced the cast as there were some interesting choices – I'll give it a chance. I just hope they take big swings, I think the sort of 10 to 1 sketches of the US version could do well here. I just worry this trailer doesn't give me that indication

@stevelaucella @TheCinesthetic I think it should go to the person who gave the best acting performance, rather than the person who shows fealty and deference to your institution – but that's just me. Fortunately it did.

@TheCinesthetic Honestly it should have gone to someone there. If you don’t care enough to be there. You shouldn’t get it. And Del Toro was way better in that movie than Penn.

@AllyFogg @s4liex That's exactly it...she is aware of Andrew Tate, but I think has only encountered his content through e.g. the Matt Shea documentary. There's definitely a subtlety to the insidiousness of these manosphere figures beyond Tate that people like her weren't aware of.

@s4liex @rick666james I’m not only chronically online, I have also been writing about the politics of the Manosphere for about 20 years so fair enough BUT are there many people who aren’t aware of the whole Andrew Tate phenomenon by now? How many BBC/ITV Manosphere documentaries have there been?

Watched the Louis Theroux Manosphere doc last night. A bit underwhelmed. With apologies for laziness, someone sent me a TikTok which absolutely nails it IMO, so I will share this rather than just saying the same less eloquently….

@AllyFogg @s4liex I agree with you, these were probably the most interesting parts. But that is also a different documentary. I think we shd remember that we are all likely too online for this doc. I watched with my normie wife who was completely unfamiliar with these people and their reach.

@s4liex @rick666james Yeah I think ‘missing’ was the wrong word, but they were probably the most interesting characters in the film & I would have been more interested in hearing more from them.

@2fucked2care @Besty_019 @Johntheduncan But like you say, it's only how it 'seemed'. We were left to draw our own conclusions. Many pro-Palestine types called it soft, while pro-Israel types called him antisemitic. Rightly or wrongly, answering the question would have bound Louis to one tribe.

@rick666james @Besty_019 @Johntheduncan Tbf when i watched it he seemed to be calling out israel for what there doing. The problem he may have is that if he wants to go back there to do another documentary he would be blocked from doing so if he did. I think he was firmly on palestines side rather than the zionist's

Thought the Theroux documentary on the manosphere was good at highlighting how simultaneously monstrous, pathetic, and bizarre these characters are but I do think there are times where his schtick backfire on him particularly during his last interaction with the HS guy

@2fucked2care @Besty_019 @Johntheduncan I haven't watched it since it came out, but I remember it as focusing on the lives of the settlers themselves, rather than the system which allows and encourages them – other than the very telling interactions with the IDF where they completely showed their own ass.

@JamieBankroll @expectedtry @MelanieJaneRey @Johntheduncan You're very insistent that these people have to have faults beyond their moral character that they clearly don't have. They're awful people, but that doesn't mean they have to be dumb, bad at things, etc. The issue is that they aren't, and that's why it's thorny.

@JamieBankroll @expectedtry @MelanieJaneRey @Johntheduncan Obviously defining 'smart' is only as useful as the criteria you are judging it on. It's smart because they did all that and were very successful at it where others often fail. I don't doubt that if these guys were in another industry, they would likely rise to the top there too.

@Besty_019 @Johntheduncan He did – but that was not strictly a declaration of allegiance, whereas directly answering HS's question would limit his ability to be nonpartisan on the issue.

@MaxBancroft2 @Johntheduncan This isn't entirely true. That same interview was shut down when Louis went for his 'gotcha' and asked about HS's criminal charges, which were clearly supposed to be off the table (based on their reaction to the question).

@rick666james @Johntheduncan Think people are missing the fact that this is a documentary, not a 'gotcha'. Louis never tries to make 'gotcha' pieces, but he does try to authentically show what it's like to be around these people. He just showed what actually happened and that in itself was revealing.

@rick666james @Johntheduncan That point is also not relevant to the the interview and was an obvious way to sidetrack, which is why he didn't answer. He's done a few docs that cover that issue already, check them out
