CTV Question Period
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith insists she is a pro-Canadian federalist, but appears intent on enabling a vote on secession to proceed. Vassy asks Smith: Is it to, as Doug Ford said today, just appease the 30% of your base that wants this?

@wealthmoose He’s right. Canada is better with Alberta. It’s just that Alberta is much worse with Canada.

🇨🇦 Mark Carney says Canada is better with Alberta. The timeline: 📋 👉 Carbon tax — $110/tonne 👉 Pipeline held for carbon market compliance 👉 Carbon MOU applied nationally as template 👉 Alberta referendum blocked by court 👉 301,620 signatures ignored Then Alberta announces a fall referendum vote.🗳️ Then Carney says Canada is better with Alberta. The order of those events matters. 🛢️🇨🇦 @MarkJCarney @JeffreyRWRath @ABDanielleSmith #CdnPoli #Alberta #DanielleSmith

Thank you to my friend, Stephen Colbert.  He has been an icon of late night comedy, a warrior for free speech, and a much needed voice in our politics. I have no doubt he will continue to be all of that and much more. Congratulations on an amazing run, @StephenAtHome!

In Québec, we know a lot about separation and referendums. Each time we held one, the party in power in our province had campaigned on this platform- independence- and been elected because of that. In Alberta, Danielle Smith never did. THAT, is not only dishonest, it is hypocritical. The court tells her her referendum is illegal : she ignores it. The courts are part of Democracy- a co-equal branch. Do not think that holding a referendum, even if the result is that Alberta stays in Canada, is without impact. Québec knows it. Referendums are fratricide. The break-up families. Some forever. The scars remain. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli @ABDanielleSmith
Nate Glubish@nateglubish

I believe Alberta should stay in Canada. I believe Canada is worth fighting for. If a question on Alberta staying in Canada is put to a referendum on October 19, I will be voting to stay. Now let me tell you why the NDP's attacks today are completely dishonest. 🧵

Don’t remember Carney running on “net zero,” “transitioning” the economy & his obsession with Carbon Taxes in the election Carney wrote about it in his book, “Values,” that he penned before becoming PM He *campaigned* on affordability, a deal with the USA & more money for CBC
Juno News@junonewscom

PM Mark Carney says the transition to "net zero" poses major economic challenges, but argued Canada is positioned to become a "low-risk, low-cost, low-carbon supplier that the world needs." He describes this as a "strategic opportunity" for both British Columbia and Canada.

Pierre Poilievre and Danielle Smith can wrap themselves in flags all they want. It doesn’t change what they’ve spent years doing. They told Albertans that Canada is broken. That Ottawa is corrupt. That the federal government is an enemy occupying force. They fed that anger deliberately, strategically, because it won them votes and kept their bases fired up. That is not leadership!!! You don’t get to spend years pouring gasoline on every grievance, real or manufactured, and then act shocked when someone finally strikes a match. You don’t get to call the country illegitimate and then demand credit for loving it. And you absolutely don’t get to praise the enemies of Confederation, validate the rhetoric of separation, and then claim you never wanted it to go this far. Because here’s the thing about praising the enemy long enough: eventually, you become the enemy. Real leaders defend the country even when they disagree with the government. They understand the difference between loyal opposition and accelerationism. They cool tensions instead of stoking them. They know that a nation is fragile, and they treat it accordingly. Poilievre and Smith made a different choice. They chose wedge politics over national unity, outrage over reconciliation, and personal ambition over the country they claim to love. They didn’t light the match directly. But they spent years soaking the floor.

If Danielle Smith announces a referendum on separation tomorrow, despite all that has happened, with stolen voter data and lack of First Nations approval, I will start making plans to leave Alberta. It's that simple. I think many others will as well. #abpol
