@rmoserr Absolutely. As an auditor, they treat you as a cost center. As an M&A advisor, they treat you as a partner to help them with important strategic decisions.

If I were starting in corporate finance from scratch: 1) Master Excel before my 1st day of work 2) Learn to communicate with non-finance teams 3) Think in systems, not random numbers across the business 4) Build a personal brand The best jobs never get posted. They come to you.

@irentdumpsters Absolutely. I’m 50/50 now however making some big adjustments now to get to 75/25 by end of 2025. It’s so hard

@brett_finance This is exactly my situation and feeling! Worked for 11 years at big 4 as auditor, now working 4 years in m&a. Unique and valuable combination.

It’s easy to be critical of small things with hindsight. And thinking about a career in corporate finance… The days can be long You are a support function It can be hard to feel valued It’s much harder to appreciate what’s going well. For example, the birds-eye-view that we get in finance is unmatched. But I’m the first to admit how much I take it for granted. But every budget season I’m reminded by it when I think about the interconnectivity of everything in my financial models. A change in sales drives a change in operations and a change in margins… etc. And very few people outside of our positions can see this or understand it fully. It’s one of the skills I take for granted often.
