2) Paper labels *must* be removed in order to recycle plastic film via store drop-off. Paper is a big contaminant for plastic film (all kinds of plastic, but especially film as the fibers are so hard to remove). So, the paper labels should be peeled off or cut off!

@CharDreizen Can unbroken boxes that fit in the blue bin be recycled? Small boxes, shoe boxes, etc.

Rainy day reminder that while broken down cardboard can normally be picked up outside of your blue bin in DC, it can’t be when it’s wet out! Once wet, cardboard + paper can’t be recycled as sorting infrastructure at recycling facilities rely on it being firm + flat + dry!

@CharDreizen Can I put small cardboard boxes in the recycling container without breaking them down? Don’t they get smushed in the truck anyway?

In DC, cardboard can be collected for recycling outside of your blue recycling cart. But, it must be broken down (and not contain a branch tbh)

@CharDreizen I get bird food in a plastic bag marked LDPE 4. DC recycling says it can’t be recycled curbside. Where can I recycle these bags?

Citywide, we only recycle 19% of aluminum cans in DC. That’s bonkers. Let’s get *ALL* aluminum cans into recycling bins, chutes, and dumpsters + make to always empty them out first. If you snap off the tab while sipping, make sure to pop it back into the can before recycling!
