Originally published in 1874, History Of The Conflict Between Religion And Science popularized the "conflict thesis," which proposed that scientific inquiry and religious institutions are forces that are inherently opposed and irreconcilable.
Draper documents the inevitable specific conflicts between the two since ancient Greece, explaining the ascendance of Christianity, it's alliance with, and undermining of, Imperial Rome, its rejection of Greek philosophy and science, the establishment of the Inquisition and Auricular confession to detect and punish heresy, scripture subverting reason and natural curiosity.
"Not a man was safe. In the hands of the priest, who, at the confessional, could extract or extort from them their most secret thoughts, his wife and his servants were turned into spies. Summoned before the dread tribunal, he was simply informed that he lay under strong suspicions of heresy. No accuser was named; but the thumb-screw, the stretching-rope, the boot and wedge, or other enginery of torture, soon supplied that defect, and, innocent or guilty, he accused himself!"
He further demonstrates that Christianity does not confine itself to matters of faith, but has and always will engage in political control and asserting its terrestrial interests. Moreover, the Church has by and large opposed advances in philosophy, medicine, technology, and economics.
