This place is just awful isn't it? Let's see how long I can stay away in 2026. A week? A day?

@ariaclast Yeah, I feel the same way, but I think it might be this place, you know. Perhaps I should try and see if I can stay away again. Happy New Year, you guys.

I find myself not having strong opinions about individual stories like closing Primrose Hill this evening and Alex Hartley’s talking about her period on TMS beyond the feeling they contribute to a general sense everything is gradually getting worse.

@portraitinflesh Do you remember when parents didn't want their kids having those ones? It's hard, now, to think into the reasons that might have been.

@ariaclast @DavidDPaxton @enricorego That's part of what I'm asking. If a demographic is associated with a crime, when should that be emphasised? For example, say most phishing scammers are men? Should we all talk in those terms?

@robcmorgan @DavidDPaxton @enricorego Neutral is fine. Neutral would be “this is clearly a problem within the Somali community”. Instead it’s always deflection, subject change, whataboutery. This is bad for its own sake, and reflects the total resolve of politicians to never admit to a debit column for immigration.

@DavidDPaxton @enricorego state should emphasise, or downplay? I don't think this is obvious, but I get the impression you do? Shall we say that we need to inform people about, say, Nigerian fraudsters so they can be more vigilant? Something like that? 2/2

@DavidDPaxton @enricorego We know why he's wanting to deflect back to white men, don't we? This is another thing we could 'know'. But I suspect the best thing is likely for state voices to be excessively neutral. If a particular demographic commits a particular sort of crime, is this something the 1/2

@enricorego @DavidDPaxton When a particular nationality or race commits particular crimes, it's a choice whether to characterise the race as centrally relevant. David thinks it's obvious that it should be characterised and that the alternative is like elite demonisation/suppression of natural behaviour.

@DavidDPaxton Why are politicians so worried about about alienating a small minority whilst alienating a large swathe of the majority?

Musk is extremely petty as shown by him posting (and then deleting) his DMs with Taibbi. But God they are all terrible. Every text and DM is just an endless dance of sycophancy and narcissism with intellectual laziness being the unifying glue. Musk world is horrifying.

@ikeijeh @BenKentish "hypothetical indifference about arson" "For all I care" is not hypothetical indifference. We are allowed to understand how English works, you know.

@BenKentish Connolly sent one swiftly deleted tweet expressing hypothetical indifference about arson & was given a jail sentence & a criminal record. El-Fattah spent years tweeting violent racist, antisemitic, misogynistic, homophobic hate & was given citizenship & the red carpet. Grow up.

Amazing how many people who insisted Lucy Connolly was a free speech martyr being unfairly punished for mere “hurty words” are now furious about other, similarly vile social media posts.

@LoftusSteve It can do. You certainly wouldn't want to take that gamble. So many of the problems that you identify in society would be worse if people were forced by the state to bear unwanted children.

We need to talk about abortions. I was shocked to find a 3rd of all pregnancies are now aborted. That's a near 50% increase since 2010. And it's not under 18s, they are down. It's women 30 - 35 driving the numbers. Without abortions the UK TFR would be 2.11.
Paul Johnson@PJTheEconomist

Our birth rate has plunged. Just 1.4 children per woman which means a falling population. Aldo quite possible policy will overshoot and we’ll soon be in a world of net emigration. Completely new challenges for which we are not remotely prepared. thetimes.com/article/332c9f…

@pootswin1 @LoftusSteve Well if I believed that, I'd think about abortion differently. And also think that God is responsible for untold billions of death.

Even if they returned to 2000 rates the TFR would be 1.61. I'm pro choice, but everything has its limits. Should the NHS be paying for nearly 300k abortions a year? Where's personal responsibility?

@reinemargot3 @DAaronovitch @RhydianLFrancis @Conservatives You could make a case that we ought not to call the thing we do Christmas, but there's no better name. Also, I think it's rather moving how secular and inclusive this festival is, such that it's easy for new people of any faith or none to slot in and play along. 2/2

@reinemargot3 @DAaronovitch @RhydianLFrancis @Conservatives Every year, my family make a big deal of a festival that is: presents, big meal, tree, Santa, stockings, Muppets, Wham, cards, carols, wreath, decorations, mince pies, yule log, fire, snow... Of those, carols is the Christian part. Some years we miss them out. 1/2

Kemi Badenoch is right. Children must be taught that Christmas is not merely about presents or Father Christmas, but about the birth of Christ. This is exactly what one expects from the Leader of the Opposition. Christian values are British values.

@DAaronovitch @reinemargot3 @RhydianLFrancis @Conservatives Yes. The primary appeal of Christmas is how secular it is. Secular magic is hard to achieve and difficult to invent. The secondary appeal is an ancient, atavistic numinous end-of-year hunkering down. There's a lot there and very little of it is from or about Christianity.

@reinemargot3 @RhydianLFrancis @Conservatives This is not a statement of fact - for many people it is precisely about Santa and presents and Elf and family and midwinter festivities. It can easily be Christmas without the religion, whatever your opinion about it

@ariaclast @DavidDPaxton Yeah, good point. Like I say, I don't quite know how to take him, I'm not sure how self-aware he is, how much he's lightly trolling. But he's not really my sort of thing as a science communicator anyway.
