We had a policy of discounted domestic oil prices once. It was called the National Energy Program. Ask your AB caucus colleagues about it. And, we did build a refinery a decade ago and it ran billions over budget. The only party that supports building more might be the BC NDP.

It’s frankly embarrassing, and an indictment of those that lead us, that gas prices in Canada have spiked to over $2 per litre because of a conflict on the other side of the world. We have, right here in Canada, the fourth largest oil reserves on the planet. Pipelines should have been built 10 years ago. Refineries should have been built 10 years ago. We should have an energy policy that puts Canada, and Canadians, first. This is ridiculous.

Canada needs to reform how we appoint judges to the superior trial courts and courts of appeal of the provinces, as well as to the Supreme Court of Canada. I am joining with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Quebec Premier François Legault, in writing to Prime Minister Mark Carney requesting a new, collaborative approach, wherein our governments can meaningfully engage in filling judicial positions in our respective jurisdictions. Bullet one is mostly in Ottawa’s hands. It’s done. The rest are mostly in Alberta’s hands and require a $130/tonne industrial carbon price that key players in the Premier’s office celebrated when the MOU was signed. In sum: Alberta, not Ottawa, is now holding up a new pipeline.

The writing was on the wall. When a government creates targeted and unfair policies against one sector, investors take notice. The unprecedented actions of the UCP against renewables - from the moratorium, to the vague rules of “pristine viewscapes” and 35km, to the hypocritical 30% upfront security requirement that no other sector has, and the $15 per module on recycling fee, these are very targeted, unfair policies against one sector….it is like death by a thousand cuts forced on the renewables sector. At Wheatland and Area Surface Rights Association AGM as I post this. Land and Property Rights Tribunal just told the world that the Govt. of Alberta was ordered to pay $40 million so far this year to landowners on behalf of deadbeat oil companies up from $30 million last year.
