@JoyceCarolOates The Republic is pretty famously the book where Plato argues in favor of men and women receiving the same education on the grounds that their apparent intellectual differences were a matter of upbringing, so a woman philosopher-king isn't at all far-fetched

a philosopher-friend born in Greece who has only read The Republic in its original Greek has said that there is no indication that the Philosopher King might not be a woman. (which seems far-fetched to me but my Greek-born friend must surely know.) what feels constricted & claustrophobic to some of us, who value the imagination & individuality, seems very attractive to others who might prefer a hive-like world that is secure, settled, & resistant to change like Plato's Republic.

@JoyceCarolOates Most radical notion in The Republic is the idea that people should not want office -- that it would be disastrous to their livelihood, rather than (as now) an opportunity to get rich.

@hermannkarlovic @JoyceCarolOates To the Finland Station and Patriotic Gore were as influential on me as any modernist novel. I am worried about turning 60 because I may want to study Russian like Edmund!

@JoyceCarolOates I love Wilson. Sontag was one of the first intellectuals I read, and so I chafed somewhat against her as she had against interpretation. I love Wilson and know he would never want to be mistaken for an academic.

no, Mary McCarthy & Edmund Wilson would not be considered "academics"; Wilson in particularly would have bristled at the notion. presumably, this brilliant literary figure could have had a life's sinecure at Harvard, Yale, Princeton but insisted upon his independence. so too with Susan Sontag, who also wanted to remain independent. yet, they were very friendly with academics, & no doubt gave lectures & talks at universities. I did not know Wilson at all but knew Susan somewhat: she was famous for showing up at lectures without having evidently prepared as (it is said) Oliver Sacks did also.

@EvaRiver4 @JoyceCarolOates But Sontag wasn’t an academic, and Walter Benjamin wasn’t either. Do critics like Mary MacCarthy and Edmund Wilson count as academics, though they only occasionally taught to make ends meet. And Bloom was big ole career academic

@JoyceCarolOates They were far too multifaceted to be consider academics. And I know Mary was Episcopalian, despite Catholic school and I suspect Edmund was as well, though atheistical mostly. And did not have the MFK Fisher experience of not being able to go to the Nixon household because Episco

the more we hear about The Mammoth Ballroom With the Mammoth Bunker Beneath the more uneasy we are feeling. why is this so important to T***p? why, right now? in the midst of a war the president has started? no other US president has ever obsessed so publicly about something so (apparently) minor which has virtually no bearing on the lives of 99.9% of Americans, will not improve anyone's life to any degree, or make much difference in US history. security is an issue anywhere the US president goes including his golf courses. unless he plans to never leave The Mammoth Ballroom With the Mammoth Bunker Beneath there will always be security issues so the literal ballroom is hardly the issue. any ideas what The Mammoth Ballroom With the Mammoth Bunker Below really entails?

Lindsey Graham: "If you don't think $400m of taxpayer is a good investment to create a secure facility at the White House ... the number one job of national security would be to protect the commander in chief, and to have infrastructure under the ballroom that is very national security-centric."

The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank. It just published a 30-year study showing immigrants paid 14.5 trillion dollars more in taxes than they received in government benefits. Every single year. For thirty years. Without exception. The country was lied to. Here is what the study found.🧵

Eric Kaufman, a conservative but fairly honest political scientist, did a bunch of work showing opposition to immigration in the west is primarily driven by racial fear not economics. And the Trump admin is largely driven by the same.
