Stop beating yourself up because you aren’t perfect or because you didn’t anticipate that something was going to happen. You’re doing your best and you don’t have a crystal ball. #caregiving

You treat everyone else nicely and it’s time to do the same for yourself. While we gear our content to caregivers, this applies to every human being. #caregiving #people #selfcare

Caregiving can get lonely! Even if you can't get out of the house it is important to stay in contact with friends. Call, text, or video call - it can be a real stress reliever!

This doesn't mean you can't get your hopes up or have high expectations but realize reality may be different than your expectations and there is no one to blame but the disease.

Expecting a certain (and only) outcome can lead to frustration when the reality is not as expected. This can be especially true when caregiving for someone with cognitive impairment and expecting them to react or respond in a certain way which is not always possible.

I also took Robert around the neighborhood in his wheelchair if the weather was nice. Robert didn't like to be cold so I'd put a blanket on him and give him his puzzle book. Although he didn't like the bumpy sidewalk so the puzzle book wasn't my greatest idea!

Caregivers have such a difficult time finding the time or energy to exercise. One way to combat stress and get some steps in is to go outside while your loved one sleeps and walk around the front (or back) yard. With or without your beloved pet!

Richard and I would sometimes do this in the morning before Robert woke up. I knew he was safe (we had a camera in his room) and it gave us an chance to get outside and walk a little with the dogs.

Whether it’s taking a nap or going to bed early, it’s important to get sleep when you’re tired. Everything you have to do will wait. #caregiving

Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be a lot to celebrate but other times there definitely is! Even if you can’t celebrate an anniversary or a birthday the way you did in the past you can still make it something special. #caregiving

Caregiving can be very isolating but connecting w/somebody does not have to be hard. Invite someone over for ice cream on a hot day, coffee & a chat, or to work on a jigsaw puzzle with you. Take the first step. You never know where it may lead. #caregiving

People can’t guess that you love them. You need to tell them. Tell your family members. Tell your friends. Do it now while they’re alive. Send the flowers while they can enjoy them not when they’re gone. #caregiving
