@ednewtonrex New technology can be humanist just like the older technologies this humanism might nostalgically return to. I think outright rejections like this are seductive but can be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. But I agree this sentiment is growing.

I think we’re at the start of a new Humanist movement across the arts. At its core this is about rejecting AI, which even in its relative infancy has proved so relentlessly exploitative and commercial. But I think this new humanism might come to encompass a broader rejection of modern technology in the creative process, in the face of an ‘AI art’ industry that uses modern technology to flood the world with ‘content’ and makes it even harder for creatives to make a living. Now that machines can make art that’s often indistinguishable from humans’ work, what may set humanist art apart is getting as far away as possible from seeming like it’s machine-made. This might mean a return to using more basic creative tools, more emphasis on live performance, more sharing of the creative process itself. Of course, any growing humanist movement will exist in parallel with a continually expanding generative AI industry. But I hope the humanist side of modern creativity thrives.

It's such a shame that the word term generative music has had its ethical integrity compromised by dodgy genAI companies :( @timexile

Checkout this series of articles on the wonderful artists and composition process for the adaptive, generative and personalisable systems in Wavepaths
wavepaths@wavepaths

This week we launch a series entirely about our #music #composition for #psychedelictherapy. Weekly essays will explore the creative processes and inspirations that shaped our approach, with artist spotlights celebrating the very human musicians that bring our music to life.

@teropa Yeah I think this was a while ago now. Do you know of any projects which have actually used it?

The mastering chain is proprietary, with precompiled libraries and headers available for Windows, OS X, and iOS. Seems to me the potential reach of this "standard" would be far greater if this bit was open source tbh.

TIL there's an "official" format for audio stems, by Native Instruments. Up to 4 stems distributed in one MP4 file with embedded JSON metadata. Includes parameters for a compressor + limiter to be used for final mastering when played back. stems-music.com

@beardyman I constantly ask myself if my work is genuinely going to improve quality of life and or if someone in the future could use it to degrade quality

Genuine question: if i took the opportunity of working for an AI music company… to try and make it a useful, controllable tool for musicians… would you hate me?

@ednewtonrex The key thing here for me is who benefits? Artists are happy when their work inspires other artists who benefit from the joy of creating the work, sustaining the art form. Artists are not happy when their work benefits tech founders/investors and destroys the art form.

Something that’s often overlooked when people argue AI learns like a human: artists are *happy* for people to learn from their work, but it’s clear the vast majority are *not* happy for generative AI models to be trained on their work without permission. This in itself - among many other reasons to treat them differently - is a key distinction between the two.

Currently editing a conversation w/ @naotokui_en (@neutone_ai ) [in the context of music and ai], "Dumb AI is totally fine when it comes to creative process... what matters is those interesting mistakes..." What we call "mistakes" may be novel starting points for new art.

@doctorow @ednewtonrex @matdryhurst I think some of the arguments in this make sense, but to me they suggest the best way of regulating non-consentual training would be to assess why it is being done and what benefits or risks that entails, then grant perms if appropriate. Do you agree?

Cory Doctorow NO LONGER ON TWIT TER
When it comes to AI art (or "art"), it's hard to find a nuanced position that respects creative workers' labor rights, free expression, copyright law's vital exceptions and limitations, and aesthetics. 1/
