Big news from the CoxHealth Board: Sally Hargis, VP and Chair of @OzarksCokeDP, is the new Chair of CoxHealth’s Board of Directors, succeeding Dr. @HalHigdon, who is now Immediate Past Chair. “Dr. Higdon guided us through transformative partnerships, including bringing comprehensive pediatric care to southwest Missouri and building a new inpatient rehab hospital,” says Max Buetow, CoxHealth’s President and CEO. “I see Sally’s fingerprints on so many of our region’s most important projects and causes — publicly visible through Ozarks Coca-Cola and quietly in her personal philanthropy. She’s not in it for the spotlight. She’s in it because her roots go deep in our community, and she truly cares about our collective future.” We’re proud to have visionary leaders shaping the future of health care in the Ozarks.

We're thrilled to welcome Sarah Becker as the new vice president and administrator of St. Louis Children's at CoxHealth, helping us expand access and elevate care for children and families across our region! See our full news release below: As the next step in the evolution of pediatric care in southwest Missouri, St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth has selected Sarah Becker for the role of vice president and administrator of the new joint venture. As we announced in June, CoxHealth and @STLChildrens — with the support and expertise of pediatric specialists from @washumedicine — have formed a joint venture to bring more advanced care to children and families in Springfield and the surrounding region, reducing the need for families to travel long distances for care. Becker currently serves as director of Therapy and Audiology Services at St. Louis Children’s. In her new role, she will relocate to Springfield and serve as an integral part of the leadership team, providing strategic and operational direction to expand access to world-class pediatric specialty care. “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Sarah,” says Ashley Casad, senior vice president and president of Springfield hospitals at CoxHealth. “Her experience leading at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and her deep commitment to improving care for kids make her an incredible addition to southwest Missouri. Her growth mindset and collaborative spirit will be instrumental as we expand access and elevate care for children and families across our region.” Becker will lead the joint venture in its next steps, which include creating a new pediatric hospital within the walls of CoxHealth. In 2026, the venture plans to break ground on a comprehensive outpatient center that will include ambulatory surgery, pediatric specialty care clinics, imaging, laboratory services, and infusion, as well as physical, speech, and occupational therapy. Together, these enhancements will increase local access to more highly specialized medical and surgical care. “With more than 25 years of health care experience, serving many communities throughout Missouri, Sarah has dedicated her career to improving the lives of children and their families,” says Trish Lollo, St. Louis Children’s Hospital president. “Her compassion, leadership, and wealth of expertise make her an ideal leader to guide and grow St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth.” Over the past nine years, Becker led the rapid expansion of St. Louis Children’s Hospital Therapy Services, including opening four new sites of care in Missouri and Illinois and deploying the region’s only pediatric audiology mobile unit. Her collaborative leadership style and partnership with WashU Medicine physicians have enabled St. Louis Children’s physical and occupational therapy, audiology, speech pathology, athletic training, and electroencephalography programs to grow by more than 50% over the past five years. Becker is a native of Rolla, Mo., and obtained her bachelor’s and master's degrees in Health Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is a licensed speech language pathologist and has provided care in both hospital and school settings throughout her career. She will assume her new role leading St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth on Dec. 1.

The Alliance for Healthcare Education is now two years old! A lot has happened since the initial announcement in 2023 – from the addition of new affiliates to the formal groundbreaking just a few weeks ago. As we’re celebrating this innovation, we’re taking a look back at some words of wisdom that Shallina Goodnight, executive director of The Alliance, shared at Good Morning Springfield this spring. Shallina made it clear: The Alliance for Healthcare Education isn’t just about education — it’s about preparing students for real-world success. "Through The Alliance, an 18-year-old graduate can now have two years of college under their belt and a credential they can use,” she told the crowd of more than 350 community leaders. “They can go to work for a health care partner, continue their education, and at just 20 years old, they could be making $65,000–$70,000 a year — with no debt. Imagine that!" The Alliance is an innovative initiative designed to connect students with meaningful health care careers. As Shallina explains, health care is more than just doctors and nurses — it’s a diverse field that requires professionals from all backgrounds. The Alliance for Healthcare Education recognizes that to truly meet the needs of this complex system, we must expose students to a wide variety of career paths. "Health care is a dynamic ecosystem that takes all types of people and professions to be able to be effective,” Shallina says. “If we can connect with people who really should have a whole world of positions, we can help them find valuable, great careers they can be passionate about." This program provides high school juniors and seniors with hands-on experience in a real hospital setting. Students graduate with a high school diploma, professional certifications (such as CNA or PCT), and even an associate degree at no cost to them. This means that by age 18, they can enter the workforce immediately or continue their education without financial burden. You can see the full story on our blog in the comments below.

A new chapter in health care education is underway in Southwest Missouri. The @Alliance for Healthcare Education marked a major milestone today, breaking ground on a $19 million expansion at Cox North Hospital alongside community partners and Gov. Mike Kehoe. The project will add 40,000 square feet of state-of-the-art educational space, expanding affordable health care career pathways for learners of all ages—from high school juniors to adults pursuing new opportunities. Today’s ceremony also celebrated new workforce affiliates, with Burrell Behavioral Health and Citizens Memorial Hospital officially joining The Alliance. “This expansion is about more than bricks and mortar. It’s about creating opportunity at scale,” says Shallina Goodnight, executive director of The Alliance for Health care Education. “By joining forces with Burrell and CMH, we’re ensuring that behavioral health and rural health care are front and center in shaping the future workforce.” Founded through an unprecedented partnership among CoxHealth, @officialSPS , @MissouriState, and @OTCedu later joined by @EvangelUniv as an affiliate. The Alliance continues to align health care providers with educators to remove barriers, strengthen partnerships and build Missouri’s health care workforce of the future. This expansion reflects a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of health care professionals and ensuring quality care for communities across Missouri.

As part of a visit to Springfield for the @SGFChamber State of the State address, Governor Mike Kehoe wanted to see “health care in action,” and our teams were eager to deliver. We were proud to welcome @GovMikeKehoe and leadership from the @HealthyLivingMo (Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services) on Monday for a tour of our Cox South Emergency Department and meetings with our Emergency Department and EMS teams. “This ER is incredible – you see very few that are this comprehensive and that offer this many private rooms,” the governor said during the tour. The group -- which included Sydney Scott, (Policy Advisor for Gov. Kehoe), Sarah Willson, (Director of DHSS); Tim Van Zandt (Deputy Director DHSS), and Ben Terrell (Legislative Director, DHSS) -- met with Drs. Bryan Finke and Howard Jarvis; representatives from CoxHealth’s executive leadership; as well as teams in ED communications, trauma, and EMS. In addition to discussing emergency and EMS care, our leadership teams focused on critical issues like innovation, workforce development, and health care’s vital role in our region’s growth and progress. We appreciate the ongoing dialogue and engagement with Gov. Kehoe and our state officials. “It means a lot to our teams – and to our leadership – that the governor would take time to visit and show an interest in the work of health care,” says CoxHealth President and CEO Max Buetow. “Health care is a major driver for southwest Missouri, and we will continue to innovate, collaborate, and be a strong partner in the region’s future.”
