A fiery speech by South Africa's🇿🇦 EFF leader Julius Malema, over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals. “You say Zimbabweans take your jobs. Nigerians take your jobs. You march, close shops and beat up people. Tell us after doing that how many jobs have you created, by beating up these Nigerians, Zimbabweans and Ghanaians? You beat people because they took your jobs. You close a shop that hires people. How many have you created after beating and chasing them? Unskilled men, with no skills, none whatsoever, say somebody took away their jobs. I don't want your votes if you behave like that. Take them away. Pushing out of school an African child that looks like you, I will never do that. You can take your votes. Make me die with my conscience very clearly. I will never refuse a pregnant woman of African descent to give birth in the clinics of South Africa. Never!”

That assumption is exactly the issue. Addis is already a major hub, and Ethiopian Airlines already reaches most African countries( 90%). So the constraint is not really airport capacity or even basic network coverage. What actually matters is frequency, timing, pricing, and connectivity beyond just capital cities. People don’t just need “a flight” they need: -multiple daily options -competitive pricing -seamless, well-timed connections Running daily or high-frequency flights to every destination requires consistent passenger volumes. If the demand isn’t there, airlines either reduce frequencies or keep prices high to stay viable. That’s where Dubai and European hubs win. They aggregate massive global demand, which allows them to offer better schedules, lower fares, and more reliable connections. A mega airport in Addis will improve transit efficiency, yes. But it doesn’t fix the underlying issues of thin demand, fragmented networks, and regulatory constraints across Africa. That’s why, even today, many African routes still connect more easily through hubs outside the continent

@roger_sent @cnni You are complicating simple thing! Assume Addis has direct flights to all 54 countries and to some countries multiple cities! Questions to you? Why would you travel to Paris, London, Dubai, Qatar to travel to other African country or city? Wake up.

Flying between African cities forces many travelers to transit outside the continent, through London, Paris or Dubai. But a $12.5 billion airport under construction in Ethiopia could help change that. cnn.it/4mLS4Bj

@WilliamsRuto simply wanted to throw a bit of shade at neighboring countries while carefully avoiding the real reason fuel is more expensive in Kenya Kenya’s higher fuel prices are being justified on three grounds: that it is a middle income country, that it has a larger paved road network, and that it is undertaking massive road construction (over 6,000km). But none of these, on their own, adequately explain the price difference. First, income classification is largely irrelevant to pump prices. Kenya is a lower-middle income country under the World Bank, but this does not automatically translate into higher fuel costs. In fact, several lower-middle and even upper-middle income countries have significantly lower fuel prices. Countries like Egypt, Indonesia, and even upper-middle income economies like Malaysia often maintain lower pump prices through tax policy choices, subsidies, or different fiscal structures. This clearly shows that fuel pricing is not a function of income status, but of government policy on taxation and energy pricing. Second, while Kenya indeed has a more extensive paved network than its neighbors, this must be viewed alongside fuel consumption. Kenya is by far the largest fuel consumer in East Africa, using an estimated 10 billion litres annually, compared to roughly 1.5 to 2 billion litres for countries like Uganda. This means Kenya has a much broader tax base from fuel consumption alone. If anything, higher consumption should allow for lower levy rates while still generating substantial revenue. The argument that a larger road network necessitates higher fuel prices only holds if consumption is low, which is not the case in Kenya. Third, the claim of over 6,000km under construction reinforces the same narrative of high infrastructure ambition. But again, the issue is not whether Kenya is building more, it is how it chooses to finance that expansion. In essence, Kenya’s fuel prices are high not because it is a middle-income country, nor simply because it has more roads, but because it has chosen to tax fuel more aggressively to finance its fiscal and infrastructure priorities. That is a policy decision, and like all policy decisions, it comes with trade-offs.

@BenCrellin It's fakenews. If Villa finished 5th and win Europa League it's 5teams that will represent. The only way 6th will represent is if Forest wins the Europa league.

The Europa League final is the only UEFA final that happens before the end of the season. It’s in the midweek before the final day of the PL season. If Villa win the Europa League and are ahead of 5th place by 3 points or less then the race for the final Champions League place will be nuts on the final day. 6th place gets UCL if Villa win the UEL and come 5th in the PL. Villa play City away on the final day.

@NBRBug A few days ago, I attended a conference at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, and this is actually the second time I’ve noticed significant floor vibrations in their large, roughly 20-meter span halls. The first time, I brushed it off, thinking it might just be me. But this time, two others (who aren’t engineers) also felt it and asked me if it was normal. As a civil engineer, I’m concerned these vibrations exceed serviceability limits. Now, imagine a large gathering, with people dancing or jumping in sync. In such a scenario, those vibrations could resonate and potentially exceed ultimate limit states posing catastrophic risks. A structural integrity review is necessary to ensure public safety and comfort. @KCCAUG @MestilHotel

Authorities in Uganda tend to focus more on regulating who comes into the country, with far less attention given to how Ugandans conduct themselves abroad. This leaves host countries to deal with the consequences when a few individuals fail to comply with visa conditions or abuse the system. We also need to be honest about a structural gap. There is little to no follow-up on Ugandans once they leave the country. Immigration should be tracking outbound travel more deliberately: where people are going, the duration of stay permitted, and whether they remain compliant with host country requirements. There should be mechanisms for follow-up and accountability, including engaging those who overstay, verifying whether their status has changed, and cooperating with host countries where necessary. That is how responsible states protect their reputation. Unfortunately, the consequences of inaction are national. Restrictions, excessive scrutiny, and measures like visa bonds end up affecting genuine travelers, researchers, and professionals. So while these policies may feel unfair, part of the problem is internal. Until compliance and accountability improve, we will continue to pay the price as a country for the actions of a few.

Because of the recently introduced US visa restrictions, we had to pay USD 30K as visa bonds for two Ugandan researchers to attend a conference. Think about this for a moment ⁉️‼️

@mwineedgar The 45-minute duration is inaccurate. The plane took off around 21:52 UTC, reached a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet and began its return to JNB at 22:17 UTC. It landed at 22:52 UTC, making the entire flight time 60 minutes.

Disclaimer: I have, if at all, very limited knowledge of aviation. However, 45 minutes after takeoff, a medium-haul commercial flight would have reached its final cruising altitude of about 38,000 feet. Is there a Bird that flies that high?

#URTravelUpdates This morning of 3rd April 2026, Our flight from Johannesburg (JNB) to Entebbe (EBB) experienced a disruption approximately 45 minutes after take-off due to a bird strike, which resulted in a shattered windscreen. The flight crew made the decision to return to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), where the aircraft landed safely. We confirm that all guests and crew are safe.
