Why does the @nytimes keep writing celebratory articles about rodeos? They are horrific acts of animal cruelty carried out in the name of “fun” - just the pictures in the article should make us weep. @MercyForAnimals

@theallinpod Totally with @friedberg on this one. @chamath talks about empathy on other episodes, but why doesn’t his empathy extend (even a bit) to large sentient mammals that are caged and made to suffer their entire lives? Industrialized animal farming is extremely cruel.

In 1947 on the cusp of Indian Independence, Winston Churchill supposedly said “…all Indian leaders will be of low calibre & men of straw.” Today, during the 75th year of our Independence, we’re poised to see a man of Indian origin anointed as PM of the UK. Life is beautiful…

@joelle_emerson Yes, they might, but this hack generally worked as a clear boundary.. people knew they got the best reply I had at 9 pm. If they got a conversation starter email from me, I didn’t read a response until next morning. Anything more urgent, we had to talk by phone/ call a meeting.

@joelle_emerson In the before times when I was still attempting “inbox zero”, I used to log in in offline mode at 9 pm after kids were in bed, reply to messages, hit sync and then close my email. That way I had only fresh mail to deal with in the morning.

If you don’t want someone sending emails at 8pm, do you also not want them doing therapy at 4pm or feeding their kids at 12pm? Or is everyone supposed to just fit everything neatly into a 9-5 workday?

@maidperdu @DKThomp To relate it back to the rejection machine comment I made: if teens didn’t have to stress about inscrutable college acceptances, they would be much happier.

This is one of the most important articles I'll write all year—and the most complete framework for how I'm thinking about progress, public policy, and a better future for all Americans: America needs an "abundance agenda" theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

@maidperdu @DKThomp Holding class size constant and changing who gets in is a focus on redistribution. I view 14% acceptance as a failure - if there are more qualified students today than earlier, UCs should up their game and serve all of them with a high quality education.

@maidperdu @DKThomp They rightly measure the diversity of the incoming class to provide wider opportunity, but they also need to focus on reducing the number of qualified students they reject, whom they are denying an opportunity.

@maidperdu @DKThomp I suspect that qualified students who were rejected will number as high as the admitted class. My argument is that Berkeley should measure that carefully and focus on educating as many qualified students as possible.

@glowballist @DKThomp Agree! Not to mention, the US should be training doctors to serve the world, not importing them from needy places where they got an expensive subsidized education.

@maidperdu @DKThomp Another way to think about this is that as the richest country in the world, we should be making enough doctors and engineers to serve the whole world rather than depend on immigration. The college education system is a big blocker to the abundance agenda.

@DKThomp I have nothing against immigration but your labor shortage is by far due to your school and training system. There are 300+ millions of Americans, you could do far better with so many people instead of relying on other countries educational system.

@maidperdu @DKThomp Berkeley should be thinking about how to effectively educate 100K undergrads a year using technology vs. Competing with elite colleges on selectivity.

@maidperdu @DKThomp The UCs were a progressive project to provide every qualified Californian a high quality undergraduate education. Today they humble brag about how 112K kids applied for Berkeley’s 6200 spots. Most qualified kids are now rejected instead of welcomed.
