@singhsahana When Hindus stop putting up Christmas trees, having their kids dress up for Halloween, and Easter egg hunts-celebrate their own festivals with their kids in North America, we may have a shot at beating interfaith conversion. The convenient Hindu always appeases and assimilates.

It does not matter if Usha Vance converts or not; her children are already not Hindu. Erasure of Hindu identity has been programmed. This is the tragedy of the adjusting Hindu, the pliable Hindu, the gracious Hindu. When my daughter told me in college that her best friend, a Christian told her she always prayed that she would one day embrace Christianity, I knew about this problem. Imagine in today's polite world where people are 'evolved' and have studied in top universities, they still have the audacity to speak about erasing the Hindu identity. It is a wonder that we Hindus are still standing, still proud and still holding on to our devatas and traditions.

BREAKING: In a bipartisan show of support, FOUR Members of Congress have sent a letter to @RutgersU, raising concerns about the upcoming event “Hindutva in America: A Threat to Equality and Religious Pluralism, hosted by @RUCSRR. Our sincere thanks to @RepSuhas, @RepMcCormick, @RepShriThanedar, and @SanfordBishop for speaking up for Hindu students who may feel unfairly targeted or unsafe–something that is highly plausible when their powerful tenured professors sponsor one-sided, biased events that target their faith and paint them as extremists who need to be investigated by the US government. In fact, over the past two weeks, we have heard from and counseled many students who are feeling vulnerable and concerned that their religion and identity are at risk simply for being a Hindu on campus. America is founded on freedom of speech and religion and everyone should be concerned when the institutional power of universities, media and policymaking is co-opted to shut down speech of those that the power brokers disagree with. Lastly, we thank the four Members of Congress for pointing out the insensitivity of using such half baked reports to target the same community that is enduring a sharp escalation of hate - both in the online and the real world. For instance, the community recently celebrated the festival of Diwali, where every innocuous greeting of light, joy and peace by a lawmaker was met with a volley of hate and bigotry. And we have seen multiple Hindu temples vandalized since Dec 2023, threatening basic sense of security and solace that a place of worship should stand for. And yet, when we stand up against such bigotry, we are labeled as “Hindutva extremists.” As supporters of free speech ourselves, we do NOT ask for this event to be shut down. We simply repeat our ask to @RutgersU to disassociate itself and its brand from this event–so that a clear message goes out to Hindu students on campus that the University stands with its students and does not support the anti-Hindu rhetoric being peddled via the event and the report.

When Hindu students celebrate Dussehra, Ram Navami, and Diwali, and chat the sacred mantra “Jai Shree Ram,” they can be labeled as “Hindutva extremists” or terror sympathizers by the very same people behind the October 27th event at @RutgersU. Here is one such example of an academic associated with @RUCSRR. A reminder to the university as it evaluates a response to our campaign, which has now reached thousands of students, parents, lawmakers, and concerned individuals across New Jersey and the US.

The California State Legislature passed SB 509, over the objections of a multi-faith diverse alliance opposing it. They ignored the exorbitant cost of this bill when the state is already dealing with budgetary challenges. They did so even though they lack any data showing that Transnational Oppression occurs in California. And worst of all they prioritized this non-existent problem, over the real problem of recurring attacks on Hindu Temples happening right here in their state. As a reminder- since December 2023, FOUR Hindu temples in California have been desecrated with vandalism attacks—all masquerading as anti-India speech. This is on top of the rising anti Hindu hate in the state per data released by Attorney General Bonta’s office and the spate of burglaries and break- ins. SB 509 is nothing but an attempt to give legal cover to those behind such attacks-all of which already target Hindu temples on the premise that they are “agents” of the Indian state. The bill will discriminate between and privilege certain groups over others by arbitrarily assigning labels of “dissidents” to some and “agents’ to others. And it will strengthen the privilege of groups that already enjoy access to California institutions over other immigrant heavy groups that struggle to get heard. Lost in the noise is the fact that the so-called training materials have already been built, BEFORE this bill was even proposed. Who created the training? What does it say? There is NO transparency, which is exactly what we were afraid of. We are happy to see that a large number of Assembly Members (21 out of 80) abstained from voting on this travesty. We are also pleased to see a few important amendments in the bill that we had asked for such as the addition of diversity and changes to initial attempts to curtail freedom of speech. However, given the still problematic status of the bill, its potential expense and its duplicative nature, we have joined hands with other Hindu Advocacy groups to ask Governor Newsom to veto the bill. @CAgovernor please keep California safe and equal for all. #CaliforniaForAll. cohna.org/sb-509/
