I recently got to thinking about how the idea of wages catching up to housing prices in a zero productivity growth economy is basically a giant inflationary trap. Realistically there is one path to a more prosperous economy in that scenario, cheaper housing costs. If you raise wages or other input costs, all you end up doing is raising the cost of the end product, offering no real gain in living standards. But if you can lower housing costs, both rents and prices to buy, you can get dramatically more disposable income into the economy over time and hopefully fire some productivity enhancing business investment in the process. I realize a lot of people dont like this and I honestly dont really care, but its ultimately a far more realistic solution than somehow kick-starting strong productivity growth and magically keeping housing prices stagnant for over a decade.
