Some amoebae are quite clever. Physarum polycephalum are one cell slime mold amoebae which can solve the traveling salesman problem sciencealert.com/an-amoeba-has-… How? Microtubules, and probably pleasure from sweets. Claude Bernard in 1846 showed movement of amoebae was halted by exposure to the anesthetic gas chloroform. In the 1930s Seifritz and Christenson showed the anesthetic action was not in membrane but in the cytoplasm.

With a title like this, who could resist reading? Especially as one of the two organisms covered has (my nomination for) the best scientific name ever bestowed: 'Chaos chaos.'

This Ukraine drone thing is unlikely to be related to MKV. MKV was a prototype exoatmospheric kill vehicle intended to shoot down ballistic missile re entry vehicles. Several are in existence and fielded including Arrow-3, SM-3, GBI and then Russia/China have a few. The reason it flies like this is the real operating environment for this vehicle is orbit where there is no atmosphere. That’s why it’s a square box with thrusters on each face. I’ve worked on exo KVs. They’re very small and have very limited performance and range. In this demo video, it flies for only a handful of seconds. A square box with rocket motors is an incredibly inefficient way to fly in the atmosphere. The reason aircraft are lifting bodies is so that Bernoulli’s principle does most of the lifting of keeping you in the air. Quad copters started to make sense when the power density of batteries and high performance of small motors enabled a specific mass envelope on which certain payloads and missions made sense with the ease of use, maneuverability and rapid deployment of a quad copter. But make no mistake, lifting body aircraft generally have superior endurance and payload above a certain minimum size. Center bodied aircraft like quad copters have terrible aerodynamics for high speed flight and have to make all their own lift. Rockets, other than for small maneuver, in the atmospheres makes little sense. Rocket propulsion is incredibly mass intensive, the flow rate of mass through the nozzle is always high. Like 1000s of kg per second. On these tiny guys it’s still 10s/100s grams per second That’s why people call chemical rockets inefficient. They HAVE to burn a lot of fuel per unit impulse. So they are quite suboptimal for reusable aircraft where endurance is king. They make sense for leaving the earth’s atmosphere because they’re the only fuel that generates enough thrust to do so. We don’t fly around with rocket powered planes for a reason.

I'm wondering if it could be a more advanced version of the Lockheed MKV

🚨 BIOLOGY UPDATE Scientists are discovering that mitochondria — the tiny powerhouses inside your cells — may communicate using ultraweak flashes of light. Not metaphorically. Actual light. Which means inside you right now… trillions of microscopic structures may be exchanging information through glowing biological signals invisible to the human eye. The strange part? Your body may be far less “mechanical” than we once believed. You are not just chemistry. You are electrical. You are energetic. You are alive in ways science is only beginning to understand. Maybe consciousness itself emerges from an orchestra of light deep inside living cells. The closer we look at life… the less dead matter it seems to become.

Effects of Axial Magnetic Field and Faraday Shield on Characteristics of RF Produced Plasma Using Spiral Antenna examines how static axial magnetic fields and electrostatic shielding influence the performance of radiofrequency plasmas generated by a planar spiral antenna. This configuration is widely used in large-diameter plasma processing for semiconductor manufacturing and materials science, where efficient power coupling, high plasma density, and operational stability are essential. Shunjiro Shinohara, Seiji Takechi, and Yoshinobu Kawai published this experimental study in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics in August 1996. Using a spiral antenna operating at RF frequencies, the researchers systematically investigated plasma initiation thresholds, density profiles, and antenna-plasma coupling efficiency under varying axial magnetic field strengths and with or without a Faraday shield. Key findings show that applying an axial magnetic field significantly lowers the threshold input power required for plasma breakdown and improves overall coupling efficiency. The Faraday shield, which reduces unwanted electrostatic fields while permitting inductive coupling, further enhances plasma production characteristics, leading to higher densities and more stable discharges. Detailed measurements of electron density, temperature, and power transfer efficiency demonstrate the synergistic benefits of combining magnetic fields with shielding in spiral antenna systems. This early work provided foundational insights into optimizing helicon and inductively coupled plasma sources, influencing subsequent developments in high-density, large-area plasma generation for industrial applications. The study remains relevant for researchers designing RF plasma devices requiring improved performance and reduced power requirements. For the full paper: researchgate.net/profile/Shunji…

The government is preparing to seize homes and land using eminent domain for the construction of a Data Center in Coweta County, Georgia This American’s childhood home is being “taken by force by Georgia Power. Homeowners in this county do not have a choice” It affects over 330 private properties. Georgia Power says it will negotiate purchases and easements and use eminent domain Georgia Power claims its to strengthen the grid for the growing energy demand in Georgia (due to many new data centers) The lines are widely linked to Project Sail, a massive proposed hyperscale data center campus that will span 829 acres

🚨 BREAKING: The hantavirus situation aboard the MV Hondius is no longer “contained.” A French passenger began showing symptoms during the evacuation flight home after leaving the infected cruise ship. French authorities immediately placed all five French nationals from that flight into strict isolation.[1] That matters because officials previously claimed nobody still aboard the ship was symptomatic before evacuation began.[1][2] Now potentially exposed passengers are dispersing internationally across commercial flights and multiple countries while the incubation period for the Andes hantavirus strain can stretch for up to eight weeks.[6][15] This is also not the “normal” hantavirus people are familiar with. The Andes strain is one of the few known hantaviruses capable of person-to-person transmission.[6][7] At least: • 9 confirmed or suspected cases • 3 deaths • International evacuation flights already underway • Passengers now isolating across multiple U.S. states and countries[1][5][12] The real issue here is timing. A disease with delayed symptoms becomes exponentially harder to track once exposed individuals scatter globally before becoming visibly ill. That’s not containment. That’s surveillance and hope.
