@TotherAlistair Are you looking for rules to follow to produce a layered system or patterns to recognise one? I think each might result in a different formulation of what layers are

@TotherAlistair Could be. It's gotta be wide though. Wide enough that you don't need to go round it. I think the rule is that a layer hides all access to the layer below and the width of the API is a consequence.
