It is with a heavy heart that I have today informed my whip and decided for now to no longer take the @Conservatives whip. This is a sad day for me. I am a Conservative and remain so but sadly the current Party are far removed from the Party I joined and served in Cabinet. My decision is a reflection of how far right my Party has moved and the hypocrisy and double standards in its treatment of different communities. A timely reminder of the issues that I raise in my book Muslims Don’t Matter

Sunderland is a proud, vibrant city. That’s what the people here want to be known for. That’s the story of this city! But, on Friday night, violent rioters in targeted Muslim and minority communities. Today, with @SunderlandUK deputy leader Kelly Chequer and @NorthumbriaOPCC I heard how this has affected them- afraid to go to work or Mosque, losing income and looking over their shoulder. Nobody should feel like this in our safe and friendly region. I’ve taken these concerns direct to the heart of govt and been reassured- @northumbriapol will be backed all the way to bring the extreme right wing criminals, who brought disorder to our streets, to justice.

Violent thugs have come and destroyed the town where mum & dad were born & brought up. Dad was raised in the slums of Cannon St, which are long gone. A proud boro man. A strong socialist & anti fascist. He would be devastated to see what happening today in his home town
