@bestofbreakin To be clear I meant this in a "I cant bear to see Old Yeller die" sense not "this is a flaw in the show" sense.

@bestofbreakin This always bothered me, after Walt made a trillion dollars why not have one little scene where he gets a gigantic check from some sketchy charity Saul set up or something.

@azuregums @bestofbreakin He clearly has pangs of conscience about some of the people he hurts. He's visibly upset hearing about Hugo, Jane's dad, the cleaning ladies at the laundry, etc.

@XFilesAesthetic Once you start answering certain things definitively you collapse the spookiness wave function and your imagination is no longer stirred by the nebulous shadows.

@XFilesAesthetic Its probably not possible to make a narratively "satisfying" ufo mythology because what makes those stories so compelling in the first place is the murkiness & mystery. Who can we trust? How high does it go? etc. etc. Its like seeing a monster costume in daylight vs the shadows

Unpopular opinion 👇 The biggest weakness of The X-Files was its mythology ( main conspiracy arc) . Not because it was confusing but because it made Mulder and Scully feel irrelevant and powerless. As the stakes kept increasing and conspiracy grew larger , they could barely affect it and couldn't stop it. Ultimately they were reduced to spectators instead of protagonists. And it didn't quite sit right with me.

@Xenoimpulse It took them like 4 prequels and *15 years* to get to something like a starting point for a Planet of the Apes remake movie (i.e. where astronauts land on a world where apes rule humans as in the original.)

@JamesConran1 @cszabla Ironically the movie Crash has a pretty good soliloquoy about this very topic. Delivered by the rapper Ludacris actually.

@brianchaley It is genuinely very impressive to make a mob movie so drained of any semblance of glamorization despite the fact that Brad Pitt is playing "Coolest Dude Alive." Sort of like an American "Gomorrah" with the mob as a nondescript bureaucracy of misery.

@brianchaley yeah this is a weird one. having the guy who played Johnny Sack play essentially the same character but calling him Johnny Squirrel was a strange choice

@0ba0sama Like "flat-screen tvs" being the epitome of luxury, people have this weird block where they still think you can get an apartment with a few hundred bucks and a handshake.

@willmenaker To be fair Ryan Chapelle was a huge asshole. He never did anything but get in our Boy's way.

A top notch 24 plot line was when President Palmer has to order Jack to execute his asshole boss who is played by Father Intintola and then he does it. Upon rewatch, much of the show is a workplace fantasy about when it's ok to lie to and/or kill your coworkers.

@metaplexmovies It evens out a bit and feels less dated by about season 3. I always say its like Homicide: Xtreme Los Angeles edition. One of the lead detectives even looks like Bayliss.

@conner_omalley Very few works of art can capture the rambling cadence of a dream light this. Settings kind of decohering into other more babbly bizarre settings.

@mnolangray Its pretty sad that the dreary little office in Glengarry Glen Ross is arguably a much more pleasant physical space to work in than this. Its right next to transit and there's a cozy little Chinese restaurant right next door.

I'm generally pro-return to office, but I acknowledge that one of the stronger arguments against this view is the fact that the typical American office space is one of the most soul-destroying spaces in the developed world.

@PInvararity @willmenaker Almost *every* single season has right wing politicians and defense contractors and/or oil companies either working with the terrorists or directly controlling them.

Recently rewatched season one of 24. Great television! Dennis Hopper's "Serbian" war criminal needs to be in the bad accent hall of fame, and no character in TV history was done more dirty by the writers than Jack Bauer's wife and her haircut.

@willmenaker I'm always saying this. S1 is also moody and strange in ways it could never be after it became GWOT: The TV Show. Like somewhere between 90's John Woo and The X Files.

People forget this show premiered like a week after 9/11 and the first season was still going off of a post-Cold War mindset for sourcing evil foreign villains. So instead of Muslims, we get "Serbians" who are basically just "Russians" in the minds of the viewers.

Now that I've seen the Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and the Wire, it's pretty evident to me that modern tv would not exist without David Lynch. Mad Men and the Sopranos in particular feel very Lynch.
