for the time being i'm gonna put a pause on my @initialcommitco experiment. built three full, well-tested, feature-rich apps over the past 6 weeks and barely made $10k. i generally think there is a market for these sort of "business in a box" things, but i think the timing is tough due to the MASSIVE hype around being able to build anything with AI. i think the hype is justified, but i also think the pendulum will swing back a bit as people realize how there's more to building well-designed, stable software than just a few prompts. still throwing around the idea of turning this into a dutch auction marketplace that others can list on as well as potentially using it in the future for my own stuff. just not committing to creating apps for the sole purpose of selling them every few weeks.

@levelsio @steipete Why would he say "in Europe"? Did he try operating his company in all 27 countries?

🇪🇺 @steipete on why Europe was unable to retain him as talent: "In the US, most people are enthusiastic. In Europe, I get insulted, people scream REGULATION and RESPONSIBILITY. And if I really build a company here, then I get to struggle with things like investment protection laws, employee rights, and paralyzing labor regulations. At OpenAI, most people work 6-7 days a week and get paid accordingly. In Europe, that's illegal."
Peter Steinberger 🦞@steipete

@Andric1961 @EricLebedel @IVejvoda Having spent most of my life in Bulgaria I can see both of your points as being somewhat true. Thank you for the thread and for the civilized debate.

Within just a decade, Bulgaria – once lagging behind – has not only caught up with, but surpassed Serbia economically. Not because Bulgarians are smarter or more diligent than Serbs. But because it does make a measurable difference whether a country is in the EU or not.⬇️ 🧵⬇️.

@levelsio I think this is what you need to be very clear about - that you're in favor of the EU as a whole - instead of seemingly aligning with spoiled rich people that aim to benefit from a divided Europe.

Because the EU is a good thing if it'd be democratic The US is also a federal union of states and seems to work fine Europe is much better if it's not fragmented in lots of separate countries There's little difference between me a Dutch person or German or Spanish in modern identity, we should keep our traditions though, just like Texas has its traditions while having a federal union called the United States of America But right now the European Union obviously does NOT function and is NOT democratic, because it's been taken over by an unelected authoritarian group of career politician cronies called the European Commission They stole the power from the people and we have to reform the EU to take it back Long term a federal European union of states is preferable Especially if you want to compete with China

@levelsio Not sure you can get independent "news and opinions" on X though. The algorithm shows you only stuff you're already showing interest in, e.g. interacting with leftist content shows you more leftist content and this skews your perspective on everything.

Yes, absolutely X is the #1 news apps in most European countries It's one of the few ways Europeans can read news and opinions from different sources than national (and EU!) funded news organizations which all the lean into the same direction and will never criticize the EU
David Attias@david_attisaas

@levelsio do you think posting about it on x could make a difference? it's not a rhetorical question. I'm really asking.

@CynicalPublius Why are you pissed? This wasn't charity. The US has done this in many places to establish influence. It's what global super powers do.

X is currently full of Europeans trying to tell Americans how much better life in Europe is. One of the constant refrains is "Our government makes sure we get XX days of vacation yearly." Euros do not realize that is not the flex they think it is. To us Americans it reeks of indolence, explains why worker productivity is so much lower in Europe, and it kinda pisses us off because that indolence was paid for by 80 years of American taxpayers' money defending their right to be indolent.

@alightinastorm Switzerland isn’t “refusing” the EU so much as it is choosing a stable middle position it has held for decades: deeply integrated with Europe, but not a member.

🇪🇺 So good to see the world wake up to the terrors of the European Commission I hope all the attention helps European people via their country's governments force the European Union to reform and redesign its structure to one that's actually democratic No indirect appointment of corrupt cronies but actual democracy close to the people It also makes no sense to have 720 members of the European Parliament, it's simply too much and makes it too inefficient The real cancer rotting the EU from within though is the European Commission which should be disbanded and replaced with a democratic body FYI the European Commission consists of 32,000 paid civil servants and all it does it create laws that nobody agrees with Europeans, you should keep posting about the terrors of the European Commission and vote parties into power in your country that can put real pressure on the EU to change and reform
