Is the outrage over Spygate understandable? An act of crass stupidity, I’ll grant you. But this is less Philby and Burgess and more Laurel and Hardy. Some hapless intern is sent to film from 400M on his smart phone the Middlesbrough team kicking footballs. What searing insights would the Southampton side have got? ‘Ok boss they’re kicking the ball with both their left and right feet. Sometimes they’re heading it.’ It’s all so silly. Southampton look like a right bunch of Charlies. But in the pantheon of great sporting scandals, this is pimple sized
Henry Winter@henrywinter

The outrage about Spygate is understandable. If proven, it’s cheating. It’s seeking to gain a sporting advantage over an opponent. Let’s hope this ire is also now focused on other varieties of cheating in football, namely the amount of deceit that can stain games... 1/2

I welcome HMRC’s conclusion, which has cleared me of any wrongdoing. I have been exonerated by HMRC of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax. When purchasing a home of my own with a mortgage, I did not own any other property and had no personal financial interest in the court-instructed trust set up to manage my son’s financial award. I was advised by experts that I should pay stamp duty at the standard rate. I set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this. I have always sought to act with integrity, and I believe politicians should be held to high standards - that is why I resigned from government and cooperated fully with HMRC.  I wanted to ensure that I paid every penny that I owed, and have done so. I am relieved that my family can now move on - and that I can get on with my job.

Worse thing about Brexit is all the Polish tradesmen leaving. That period when you could get jobs done well, on time, and for the right price, was the golden age of British home improvement

We’ve gone from the drama of the Aguero moment to referees watching a screen to give a foul from a corner to decide titles Premier League is a mess 😂

When you win a league title for the first time and you get no communication from the league about a trophy presentation, so have to make do with a ‘china horse” 😂😂 Congratulations to everyone at the club! Countless hours and hard work made it all worthwhile!

An awful sociopath. With an inability to look at nuance. The only thing she sees is a distorted mirror reflecting her prejudice. Lots of the people talking part are amputees. To find something negative in such positivity. So much endurance and resilience on display.

So impressive that they can do this, what with all the genocide and famine going on around them. The struggle is real ✊🏻

The biggest problem ordinary people in this country face, is how wealth is distributed If as a nation we think the man who tried to hide a £5m bung from us all is the answer, then we deserve to learn the hard way.

One thing on the pro-Palestine marches. If you accept they directly intimidate the Jewish community (which they do) then you must also acknowledge the Unite the Kingdom rallies have precisely the same effect on Muslim and other minority communities. We ban both, or neither.
