Three synagogues in the Greater Toronto Area have now been targeted by gunfire in the span of a single week. Overnight, shots were fired at synagogues in North York and Vaughan, leaving bullet holes in the doors while people were inside. This is shocking, disgusting, and profoundly disturbing.
Leaders from coast to coast to coast must call this what it is: antisemitic violence meant to intimidate Jewish Canadians and terrorize people in their places of worship. No one in this country should ever fear walking into a synagogue to pray or gathering with their community in safety.
Calgary stands firmly and unequivocally with the Jewish community in Toronto and across Canada. Words are no longer enough. The federal government must step up with concrete action, work with law enforcement to protect places of worship, and ensure those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Antisemitism must be confronted directly and stopped.
