Several communities across Jamaica have been severely impacted by the strong winds and heavy rainfall brought on by the landfall of Hurricane Melissa. Homes and infrastructure have sustained significant damage, leaving many residents displaced and in urgent need of support. The Government of Jamaica, along with emergency and relief agencies, is now mobilizing response teams to deliver aid, restore essential services, and assist those most severely affected. 📸 Here’s a look at some of the aftermath conditions across the island as recovery efforts begin. #HurricaneMelissa #EyeOnMelissa #JamaicaObserver

This will be Extremely Powerful. Hurricane Melissa will make landfall as a Category 4 or Category 5 Hurricane. This will be one of the worst Hurricanes on record for Jamaica: youtu.be/HYYXDLDxrCE?si… SEEK YOUR SAFE PLACE and be ready to SHELTER IN PLACE: Be where you need to be for Hurricane Melissa. This is Life-Threatening. Now is when we can save lives, by helping those in unsafe structures get to safer locations. Complete structure failure is possible where the center of this comes onshore, for homes that are not built well. Roof damage will be extensive, and in the core of the hurricane, roofs can be torn off. For many, power will be out for weeks, if not longer. Some roads will be washed away due to storm surge and inland flooding. Communities may be isolated. Please have many days of food and water on hand. We all have different means, so thank you for looking out for each other as you always do! The rain will be up to 700 mm in eastern sections (20-30 inches!)! The flooding will be catastrophic. Please seek safety away from areas known to flood. The storm surge, especially in and around Kingston will be life-threatening. HAITI: The rain will be getting worse as well. Life-threatening rain will lead to mudslides across the Tiburon Peninsula. I've lost touch with our team on the ground, but hopeful to hear from them soon. This is a slow mover. Some of us will have quiet weather through at least this morning, while others start to get Tropical Storm and Hurricane Wind Gusts. The highest impacts will be Monday, Monday Night, and Early Tuesday. It is always best to go through this with others. Thank you for looking out for those that might be alone. Eastern Cuba, Southeastern Bahamas, Turks and Caicos: Make your hurricane preparations now. Jamaica has gone through many awful Hurricanes, and always recovers. This will be no different. This Hurricane may be the worst Hurricane for parts (or all) of Jamaica, but Jamaica is strong and will get on the other side of this! Thank you for your kindness and patience. Please, please be safe. Give my best to your friends and family. More updates to come. - Brian
