In an all my years covering politics I have never met anyone so lacking in interest in the skills a leader needs - the ability to tell a story; to listen to colleagues; to woo, persuade & chivvy. Keir Starmer isn’t just uninterested in these requirements of the job. He is dismissive & contemptuous of them. @AndrewMarr9 sums this up in the @NewStatesman rather more memorably than I could …

@Georgia_Gould Regrettably, he did not act on his manifesto promises. Indeed, in some instances did the opposite. Additionally, there were too many avoidable u-turns!

Keir defied all odds leading the Labour Party to victory having been told we would be out of power for a generation. He led a government that invested in public services, took generational steps to end child poverty, handed more power to communities to shape their lives and delivered transformational expansions of rights for workers, renters and leaseholders. I know personally his commitment to justice, to giving everyone the opportunity to achieve their potential and his deep sense of service, that means he has always put the country first. He is an incredibly honourable man and I’m proud to have been elected and served under his leadership. Our job now is to unite as a party, build on the positive foundations built over the last 2 years, that are already showing improvements in our public services, our economy and our neighbourhoods and work every day to deliver the change people voted for us to deliver.

@Georgia_Gould He didn’t defy the odds. A donkey with a red rosette could have won. Look at the raw data. Look at # didn’t bother voting. Look at how the Tories blew themselves up. Look at how the ‘Get The Tories Out’ narrative stuck. Labour won despite Keir not because of him. Reality.

If people genuinely believe Burnham won’t receive the exact same media onslaught, they’ve not been paying attention. Starmer is not, objectively, bad. This idea that he is somehow the worst PM in British history is frankly laughable. Liz truss lasted 49 days, crashed the pound and was laughed out of Downing Street. Since Labour took office, Keir Starmer’s government has: • Scrapped the two-child benefit limit, lifting hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty and putting money back into some of the hardest-pressed households in the country. • Expanded free school meals, cutting costs for families and making sure more children get a proper meal during the school day. • Expanded funded childcare, reducing one of the biggest monthly costs facing working parents and making it easier for people to stay in work. • Raised the National Living Wage, increasing pay for millions of low-paid workers. • Strengthened workers’ rights, giving people greater protection against insecure work and bad employers. • Introduced statutory sick pay from the first day of illness, so workers are less likely to choose between their health and their wages. • Ended no-fault evictions, giving renters more security in their homes. • Brought rail operators back into public ownership, taking key services out of failed private hands and giving the public a stronger stake in how they are run. • Cut NHS waiting lists from their post-pandemic peak, meaning more patients are being seen sooner. • Raised the state pension through the triple lock, protecting pensioners’ incomes against rising costs. • Scrapped the old non-dom tax regime, making some of the wealthiest people in the country pay more fairly. • Added VAT to private school fees, raising money from those most able to contribute. • Removed business rates relief from private schools, ending an unjustified tax break. • Increased neighbourhood policing, putting more officers and PCSOs back into communities. • Helped bring knife crime down, meaning fewer families face the devastation of serious violence. • Recorded the lowest homicide rate since the 1970s, a material improvement in public safety. • Created Great British Energy, giving Britain a publicly owned clean energy company. • Created the National Wealth Fund, backing investment in industry, infrastructure and clean energy. • Passed planning reforms aimed at getting homes and major projects built faster. • Improved relations with the EU, reducing diplomatic hostility and rebuilding practical cooperation. • Agreed a UK-EU security partnership, strengthening cooperation on defence and European security. • Signed a long-term partnership with Ukraine, reinforcing Britain’s support against Putin’s invasion. • Secured new trade agreements, opening up markets for British businesses. • Helped restore seriousness to government after years of scandal, chaos and decline. People do not have to like Starmer. They do not have to vote Labour. But pretending this is the record of the worst Prime Minister in British history is absurd.

@PaulBrandITV It just shows that the main motivation for voters in a FPTP system is damage control. People want to make sure the worst elements are kept away from power rather than vote for who they think is the best party/candidate. It makes sense.

Aside from the specific circumstances of Makerfield and Andy Burnham’s personal profile, a pattern is emerging in recent by-elections… Caerphilly, Gorton and Denton, Makerfield… the tactical vote to keep Reform ‘out’ is being mobilised with significant impact. Tactical voting is cemented as a defining feature of our politics.

@nicolelampert Disinformation? Why does @nicolelampert think it's ok to facilitate the purchasing of property/land on illegal settlements from the UK? Would she be ok with Russians over here selling property in occupied Ukraine?

Henry Nowak died the same way a civilization dies: abandoned, handcuffed by authorities who neither trusted nor cared for him, and accused of hate crimes he did not commit. His murder is as tragic as it is enraging. He should still be alive today, and he would be if the last few generations of European elites had stood their ground against the politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants, many of whom despise the West and the people who love it. Henry was far from the first to so needlessly lose his life, and I fear he won’t be the last. Each time a life like his is lost, the proper response—the only response—is righteous anger. One of the most important things the Trump administration has proven to the world is that stopping the flow of mass migration and defending national sovereignty is a matter of political will and leadership. Anything else is an excuse. It is because we love the West that we want to preserve it. We love our civilization. We love our country. We love our children. And nobody—nobody—should ever die the way that Henry Nowak died. May God comfort those who loved him, and may God rest his soul.
Visegrád 24@visegrad24

In his final moments, Henry Nowak told police officers nine times “I can’t breathe” and four times that he had been stabbed. In response police officer dragged him across the gravel, handcuffed and read him his rights. It was the last thing Henry heard before he died.

@invertCucurella - Not sure why Upemecano would want to come to us. - Cucarella is probably the only defender we can rely on to play loads of games at a good level. The owners have been trying (and failing) to sell - Chalobah fpr the last three summers - no one's buying him

@90sfootball Erm.. this is not right. We signed Casiraghi in summer 1998, so this must be the 98/99 season where we would have started with: Casiraghi Zola Poyet DiMatteo Wise Laudrup LeSaux Desailly Leboeuf Ferrer DeGoey With class on the bench in Babayaro, Petrescu, Duberry (CB) & Flo

Put up or shut up - Labour MPs told to mount a challenge under the rules or shut up
Sam Coates Sky@SamCoatesSky

NEW: Labour Parliamentary committee tells "those coordinating the statements and resignations to stop" FROM THE PLP BACKBENCH REPRESENTATIVES The local and devolved assembly elections were devastating. Good comrades lost their seats - with this outcome just the latest in a worrying trend of elections results for our party and episodes for our movement. As the backbench representatives of the PLP we are speaking out now to call for everyone in the Labour movement to work in a way that can ensure we will again be on the same team, and on the same page. We are grateful for all the MPs who have spoken to us, in confidence, and told us what they would like to happen next. We will honestly reflect those back to the Prime Minister when we meet him. We respect both those who have set out their objections to the Prime Minister and those who have voiced their support for the Prime Minister. But the scenes of the last 48 hours cannot continue if we are to address the causes of distress for all concerned. We know it is not in anyones interest to see an increasingly divided PLP descend into chaos. We would ask that those coordinating the statements and resignations to stop. We want to convey to all concerned the following which reflects our discussions with colleagues: • The rules of the Party are clear regarding challenging the Party leadership. Colleagues either meet those requirements or desist. There will be lasting damage if the current position continues. • We will continue in our role to convey the honest and heartfelt views of backbenchers to the Prime Minister. It is more important than ever that our politics is conducted in a way that is respectful and embodies the values we stand for. We will do that and expect the leadership and our colleagues to do the same so that Labour can again be a force for change in this country.

@wesstreeting I really, really hope you get behind Sir Kier for the good of the country. Farage will be loving all the in-fighting and he'll be itching for a new Labour leader so he can push the "no-mandate" narrative and thay Labour are as bad as the Tories with the leadership changes.

Under Labour, NHS waiting lists are falling, ambulances are arriving faster, there are more GPs, and higher patient satisfaction. Lots done, lots to do. The Health Bill will boost the impact of our investment and modernisation: cutting bureaucracy to invest in patient care.

🚨 Can Starmer survive this? 156 Labour MPs backing the PM 92 Labour MPs wanting him gone If almost 100 MPs from your own side think you should resign, the leadership crisis isn’t coming. It’s already here.
Daniel Green@DanGreenJourno

With the names of the Starmer loyalists public, the current state of affairs within the Labour Party is 156 MPs backing the PM 92 calling for his resignation/timetable for quitting More than 150 still have yet to make a public statement, but that number is shrinking

What we cannot have now is a cabinet coup or a palace stitch-up that simply delivers a Wes Streeting coronation. Nobody who has been part of Keir Starmer’s top team can credibly present themselves as a fresh start. We need an orderly transition and a proper democratic leadership election.

@SholaMos1 This is like wanting to get rid of Biden/Kamala because they're not left wing enough and then ending up with Trump and Fascism. The happiest person i the Uk if Starmer goes will be Nigel Farage... and the country will be a hellish, hateful place after the next GE.
