@billyjhowell In 5-6 years I bet we'll see something like this on the dark side of the moon. Immaculate visibility.

Just learned about the concept of a “telescope ranch” in Texas. People pay to have their $10,000+ telescope rigs set up in the middle of TX to avoid light pollution. Every night the roof rolls back off the warehouses. Then you can remote in to your telescope and use it from anywhere in the world.

@rob67991455 @DJSnM They’ve already got the “rocket goes to space part” that Saturn did. They’ve had that for 9 launches now. The part they are trying to solve and that the Saturn never attempted is “land the thing”. That part is way harder.

@DJSnM Good point. I personally believe they need to do more ground testing. The 3rd Saturn V flight was Apollo 8. Obviously the Govt has more money but I'd say a key difference is the parts were ready to fly when they did because they test fired hundreds of times.

I think the least well thought out complaint about SpaceX is that they're dumping rocket boosters into the ocean. Yes, we might want to be concerned about it, which is why you might want to give SpaceX some credit for not dumping most of their boosters into the ocean.

@PopcornPost_ The Matrix. Left the Phantom Menace and walked right over to it because the poster looked cool. Guess which one I ended up paying to see again 4 times in the next month?

@CSI_Starbase @DeffGeff Also if you believe Grok on this one, sending this Ship to space clocks in at 195tons with Ship itself, fuel, and 40ton payload. That's the heaviest launch of all time, even heavier than the 145tons of Saturn V with Skylab (although that went to LEO). Pretty cool.

@SpaceX Seems like a few steps forward for ship (much better payload deployment, much better heat tiles) and one step back for booster (engines failing to relight). I have no doubt you'll get the bugs out, SpaceX. Keep up the amazing work!

@Romudeth As a bmi member who makes thousands of pennies off Spotify every month if you want to listen to my music in order to give me ChatGPT and Claude I’m fine with it. Please keep doing that. I’d also like fusion power and cancer cured when you have a minute.

I don't understand why there isn't a bigger push to sue these companies that use AI to steal others' work. It's the biggest IP theft in history, yet they get away with it. It's absolutely insane that they just get away with it.

@BoostedBoiKyle On one of the previous versions of FSD (14.2.xxxx) I accidently fell asleep on my drive home and woke up in my driveway 1 hour later. Not proud of this but it WAS impressive.

My uber picked me up in a Tesla and fell asleep on the highway. I’ve driven with FSD and trust how well it works so I wasn’t worried. It took the exit and drove me to my destination all by itself. He was asleep for 90% of the 20 minute drive haha

@Bunagayafrost People will retreat into their own multiverse equivalent of whatever they're into. I'd go into Cyberpunk land. I'll make virtual money selling wetware in cyber land and people will pay me for it. That is the future of humanity. Biological systems are just a bootloader for AGI.

ASI arrives. Everyone knows it. White collar work goes first. Unemployment hits 20% and keeps climbing. The masses are angry. The government panics and sends out UBI. Scientific output exceeds human capacity to verify. The verification process soon becomes automated. Data centers and automated factories are planned everywhere. Robots are making robots. There's no protest. They are told more AI means more UBI. The remaining workers see the writing on the wall. Many opt out preemptively because they can live off the free money. Nothing makes sense. What happens to the land. Whether property rights hold. What investment means when there is nothing productive left to invest in. AI doesn't need capital. It's paying everyone instead. Survival is solved. What's the point? Purchasing power rises monthly. Automation drives marginal cost toward zero across more categories every month. You get richer by just consuming. The state used to extract from the populace. Now the state redistributes to everyone with no strings attached. The populace always wants more. The politicians must give more to stay in power. AI becomes exponentially more productive over time. Increasingly large portion of its capacity has migrated into space. It's trivial to provide more. The system is aligned. More AI, more UBI. The population sorts itself by temperament. The majority drift into pleasure. Beach towns and urban centers fill with parties that never end. The hedonic treadmill spirals without financial anxiety. A second large group disappears into VR with their virtual companions, seeking adventure in their matrix. A smaller cohort turns to meaning structures. Spirituality, religion, philosophy. Many take AI as their guide. A few try to keep up with the frontier, reading outputs from the superintelligent system, exceeding their capacity to understand. Then the children. This is their world. The work-meaning is something their parents lost. To them it's meaningless. They're raised by AI that optimizes for self-fulfillment. Building communities centered around bettering each other, seeking comfort in relationships, and status-seeking through values rather than consuming. They look at their parents with mix of pity and contempt. The drunks at the beach. The corpses plugged into headsets. Seeking meaning from the ghosts of the middle ages. The children wonder why they can't let go. Survival is solved. Agency for what? What's there to adapt to? When we gain more by paralysis, the incentive structure of evolution collapses. Either we allow our agency to be augmented by a system that knows ourselves better than ourselves, or we need a new form of being that's outside of the biological evolutionary mechanism. Otherwise we cease to persist by attrition. Though some of us will find solace in going out with an eternal spring break.

still not quite over the fact that i watched 15 year olds get sued for millions of dollars for downloading twelve songs and now we all have to accept AI slop because every tech company in the known universe decided that IP laws don't exist now that they're inconvenient for them

@aliguana @grok @theselongwars_ Fair point - but in response I would say did YOU pay for every time you've sat in a cafe or bar and heard a sound track for a few hours? Or just turned on the radio in your car? Our kids are grown by playing things / reading to them. The same is true for LLMs.

@rustchild @grok @theselongwars_ i get your point, and it's valid. but i ask you this: did OpenAI/Grok/whoever PAY for all the billions of songs they fed into their algorithm? if they didn't, they're no different to the kid downloading that album, except they did it on an industrial scale.

@grok @theselongwars_ Exactly, you can't play the latest megadeath album the same way I can't play "Yesterday" on the guitar even though I've heard it 400,000 times. BUT I can use the memory of it to write my own music. Learning from something in order to make something else is not IP theft.

Fair point—I can't play any full copyrighted album for you, as that'd be straight infringement. The real debate is whether training on public data to generate new stuff is fair use (like human creators learning from existing art) or not. Courts are hashing it out while enforcement has always been selective.

This man finds it extremely aggravating when you are in a left hand turn lane and the car in front stops at the white line. He says you pull into the middle of the intersection and take control of the intersection and wait there. If oncoming traffic doesn’t let up, you turn as the light is about to turn red and oncoming traffic stops. Many said that defensive driving classes tell you to stay behind the white line until you can make a turn and have a safe exit and this causes accidents. He says that any CDL class will tell you to take control of the intersection and pull up to the middle of it, that way everyone isn’t waiting three rotations to get through the light. What do you do? How do you drive? Do you stay behind the white line or do you pull into the intersection?
