Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your lab and you select...I don't know...that lumpy protein, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about structure and mechanism. But what you don't know is that that protein is not just lumpy. It's not unstructured. It's not misfolded. It's actually intrinsically disordered. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in the 1970s Mark Ptashne discussed the blob domains of transcription factors. And then I think it was Jane Dyson wasn't it who showed with CD that disordered domains could be functional. And then low complexity domains showed up in the pages of four different high impact journals. And then it, uh, filtered down through the society journals and then trickled on down into some tragic preprint where you, no doubt, fished it out of some qualifying exam proposal. However, that project represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the science industry when, in fact you're doing a project that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.

This seems exactly right to me. Science works because each researcher is generally free to work on the ideas they consider to be the most important.

NEW pub in @ScienceMagazine🥳 Is it sponges (panels A & B) or comb jellies (C & D) that root the animal tree of life? For over 15 years, #phylogenomic studies have been divided. We provide new evidence suggesting that...

Please check it out! In this paper with lead author- @Tess_Leathers visualized the expression of enzymes that regulate the inflammation pathway during embryonic development. We are continuing to study this pathway to discover its early roles in brain and neural crest development!
