I finally tried to create an Instagram account. (I've managed to avoid it so far.) It was instantly suspended, before I'd even finished the signup process. The final screen of the signup process told me I'd submitted an appeal.

One thing I learned from open source software is that you can offer all the information publically but no one will use it. Only the creator understands the incentive and value behind the information. Outsider looking in very rarely so perhaps never

in 1968, a 15-year old in canada released a proto-shoegaze psychedelic acid folk song. it’s one of the earliest “dream pop” songs. the album was a commercial failure, falling into obscurity & lost for decades (still hardly known). it sounds like a radiohead song, but from the 60s

@ryan_prend I think so. I actually interviewed for a professor position there 2-ish years ago, and during the meet-and-greet with students, I asked about AI use. I was surprised at how honest they were about it - both admitting to using it, and articulating their anxieties about it.

If Hampshire could have held on for a few more years, I think it could have ultimately reached new heights as a place for students to learn how to thrive in an AI-driven world. Self-motivation, critical thinking, self-directed learning - these will be what students need.
Arin Dube@arindube

I see people making jokes about Hampshire college, but if you really think AI is going to push human labor into artisanal task that are hard to automate, you may wish we had more experimental colleges that offered the kind of experience Hampshire College provides.

I’m sad about Hampshire because I fundamentally believe in a good liberal arts education and that that kind of education is both about being rigorous and taking risks. We lose something fundamental when we lose the risk. Where is our laboratory for pedagogy in the humanities?

I went on a few of the strangest dates of my life with a girl who went to Hampshire. She asked me to shave my mustache after knowing me for less than a month. Used to huff nitrous and do LSD. RIP to the factory for real freakazoids

BREAKING: After years of financial struggles, Hampshire College will close after the 2026 fall semester. I obtained an email sent to the college community this morning that confirms the board of Trustees have voted to permanently close the experimental institution. @WAMCNews

@PaulSkallas notice too the way these tax breaks actually happen. what happens in practice is there's another "special circumstances" checkbox in turbotax and you get a LARGER return. tax season switches from a liability to "free government money" season

Most of history is a succession of tax revolts. Both against your own ruler and foreign rulers. Every few years battles would occur because of this. That ended when the government started withholding taxes from your paycheck before you got the money. Now there are no tax rebellions because they have your money. What we are seeing now is a systematic rebellion of taxes that is continuity with past battles. Except through democracy.
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

The emerging American tax logic right now is something like: - we can’t tax the poor because they’re poor - we can’t tax the working class because they work - we can’t tax tips bc that’s just unfair - we can’t tax businesses because they create work - we can’t tax property bc homeowners have it hard enough - we can’t tax billionaires because their contributions are so precious and also they might move or get mad or give your primary opponent $10m - and we can’t tax pensioners because they’ve “earned it.” It’s like the accommodative parenting style of politics. Every group is so very special it needs a tax jubilee. I guess that leaves … tariffs?

@dwaldenwrites it's tough to sell a post-war university with an ugly campus and no college town. the other liberal arts schools nearby (weird, experimental) are doing great

One of the worst parts of the higher ed bubble popping is that the schools that least deserve to close—weird experimental schools trying something real—will be most likely to do so, while nursing-and-business-schools-with-adjunct-English-teachers will hang on like mold.
