Everything you said is correct. That's why if I can't get around to it for awhile, and go 4k miles, I don't freak out. I drive 180 miles per day for work. I've paid close attention to my gas mileage. It drops from 29 mpg to under 26 mpg after the first 3k miles. That difference costs me as much in gas as the oil change costs. So, moneywise it's a wash. But, new oil gets me a smoother ride, better acceleration also. AND, I use the waste motor oil in a backyard forge to melt aluminum and brass. So, I save on propane as well. For me every 3k miles makes sense.

If you change your oil every 5,000 miles, know that i am judging you. Full synthetic oil is good for double or triple that length. Stop wasting your money.
