In the liberal worldview, the "self" i.e. individual people are the reason the system exists, and should be bent to serve them. This sounds reasonable: "Systems should change to suit people, not the other way around."

"The system" is a generalized thing. It is what "conservatives" seek to "conserve" as is, or rather, in the case with the modern Right, as WAS.
The system can be your family. Your nation. Your community. Your tribe, your economy etc. Anything that is beyond "the self" and could theoretically have the authority to influence the self.

Or does a certain strain of modern liberalism actively erode mental health?
