@HelenATSLT 100% agree @HelenATSLT - wonder if this is a general pattern of people feeling more able to disclose or whether this @Comm_Matters conference helped, by creating a “safer space” in terms of sessions timetabled about Autism & AAC and so, opening the door to the conversation?

The highlight of the #CM2023conf has to be the number of people that told me they are autistic, especially SLTs. I’ve never know people disclose this so openly- it was wonderful and a real sign that things are changing!

@LeeAndieJ @nicola_maddy @HelenATSLT I was indeed trained in this and it was a fundamental part of my role in my first band 6 job . I now recoil in horror at my practice in those early days and the damage that was undoubtedly done.

@nicola_maddy @sallySLTAT @HelenATSLT Helen - this is the approach I was telling you about. I was trained in this as NQ SLT as the only approach we should use for people who stammer (think sally may have been too)

We have a duty to resist the ableism in therapy approaches. To me, there is nothing more fundamentally harmful to a little person than receiving a message that the way you naturally communicate is wrong and needs to change.
