Officials in Britain warn that the volume of illegal meat intercepted at the UK border has surged in recent years. It comes after a tearjerker tale about a gang of “kidnapped” dogs trekking miles home after escaping the meat trade was exposed as complete fiction. The clip – watched millions of times worldwide – had viewers convinced they were watching a real-life animal miracle. Chinese state media tracked down the animals’ owners and found all seven dogs belonged to villagers living just a few miles away. But it highlighted the chilling reality of dog theft for the meat trade that still exists in Asia – with between 10 and 20 million of deaths happening in China, Humane World for Animals says. Up to eight million of these dogs are snatched off the street, with the vast majority “illegally acquired,” according to Wendy Higgins from the Humane World for Animals. Campaigners warn that beloved family pets can disappear in seconds. Thieves often target pets left roaming in gardens, climbing over walls before slipping a noose around the dog’s neck and dragging it back over. Wendy said: “The dog thieves will steal a certain number of dogs and accumulate them until they’ve got enough to go on a transport truck.”
