Even after being backed by @Meta, prediction markets didn’t work out in India. Looking at the rise of @Kalshi and @Polymarket, I often wonder what went wrong with Better Opinions and other Indian prediction markets launched around 2022. 👇 what went wrong 🧵

Turned -$10 → $191,521 on @Polymarket in just over a month. From October 10 to December 4 a curve that doesn’t even look real. The trader is peter77777, one of the top 0.001% NBA specialists on the platform. He doesn’t spray bets. He hits specific pre match windows in NBA lines where pricing lags before limits tighten. polycule.trade/join/sxto5u When volatility spikes, he’s already positioned. When the board recalculates, he’s already out. You don’t print almost 200K from a negative balance unless your read on spreads, ML and totals is sharper than the market’s. That’s exactly what his trajectory shows.

@thejayden Isn’t this the same as market-making but in PMs? The big risk here is: what if there are no fluctuations and his order doesn’t get matched?”

Kalshi raised $1B at an $11B valuation. A decade ago, only a few thousand people knew what a prediction market was. Eighteen months ago, most prediction markets were banned - until we overcame the government to set them free. Over the past seven years, our community has opened up an entirely new category. Today, Kalshi is trusted, used, and loved by millions of people. It’s a part of everyday culture, and it’s driving one of the most important shifts in consumer behavior in recent history. The time has finally come for prediction markets to achieve their full potential and we are intent on making that happen. To all the believers and the early adopters: thank you.

@Nithin0dha A retail trader is always on their own. Whether it’s the house, a market maker, or an institution, the odds are stacked against them. But here it's unlike a house, prices can’t be heavily manipulated because the same asset trades across multiple exchanges.

Crypto derivative exchanges exist in regulatory limbo. A bit like Schrödinger's cat—neither fully regulated nor unregulated. This ambiguity is being exploited in dangerous ways. By the way, I am not referring to the actual buying and selling of Cryptocurrency. The first risk with unregulated platforms is, of course, that there's nothing you can do if something goes wrong. The other big problem with crypto F&O is that you have no idea who's on the other side of your order. In many cases, the platform itself can be the counterparty to all trades, like dabba trading or CFDs. If the platform is the house, the incentives are distorted. It's good for the platform if the customer loses money because every customer win is the platform's loss. To make matters worse, these platforms offer 100 to 200x leverage. At that level, even a small move is enough to make you go bust. Considering the volatile nature of crypto, this is all but guaranteed. The lack of regulatory clarity on crypto derivatives is not a good thing in the long run for anyone and has to be fixed.

@mal_shaik IMO, True Product market is the hardest problem rest is secondary. You will always find good co-founders but you won't get a perfect one.

@kunalb11 This is so true, I relate to it so hard 😄 In consumer startups, you must keep messaging crystal clear because users latch onto one theme. You cannot sail in two different boats with the team.

Consumer founders who get some success are natural people pleasers. But to scale the company they run they need to dial up their need to please consumers and dial down their need to please everyone else.

Had a funny moment today: a 5-year-old kept saying, “Papa, put Cocomelon… Labrador Cocomelon.” I typed "Labrador Cocomelon,” and her dad laughed, “No, Cocomelon just means cartoon to her. Labrador is the cartoon.” It got me thinking… Like how toothpaste became Colgate, photocopy became Xerox, search became Google... Cocomelon might be becoming the toddler word for any cartoon.

The most likely outcome is that AI and robots make everyone wealthy. In fact, far wealthier than the richest person on Earth 👀 By this, I mean that people will have access to everything from medical care that is superhuman to games that are far more fun that what exists today. We do need to make sure that AI cares deeply about truth and beauty for this to be the probable future.
