Over 1000 cases barely a week past detection. Soon to be the 2nd largest Ebola outbreak ever, and echoing the 2014 mega-outbreak in all the worst ways. A thread outlining the huge challenge that looms, and some thoughts on what must be done: x.com/HelenBranswell…

🚨 @MinofHealthUG has confirmed 2 additional #Ebola cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Uganda to 7. Particularly concerning is that these new cases are healthcare workers in Kampala and unclear if they cared for any of the other known cases. When health workers become infected, it raises concerns about healthcare-associated transmission, exposures in healthcare settings, and the potential for additional undetected contacts.

Lahore is expected to hit 42°C today. Punjab senior government ministers and bureaucrats travelled to 20°C Baku (austerity measures?) while Punjab continues to wait for emergency heat measures. Not the first heatwave either, yet still no clear Heat Action Plan. Some ideas from across the border. In Delhi, the Heat Action Plan 2024-25 identifies street vendors as among the most vulnerable to extreme heat. Recommendations include improving water supply at markets, setting up more health centres, and promoting night-time trading so vendors don’t lose a day’s income by avoiding daytime heat. BREAKING: Justice Azam Khan has refused to hear the request for an urgent hearing on the suspension of sentences filed by advocates Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha, arguing that a certified copy of the Supreme Court’s order had not been attached. When the petitioners’ counsel, Advocate Faisal Siddiqi, immediately produced the certified copy before the court, the judge responded that it must first be submitted before the office, after which the request for an urgent hearing would be fixed afresh.
