We have the technology. No hand, let alone a non-European hand, need ever touch a piece of fruit in a field or greenhouse from California to Kent ever again. Right-wing parties should embrace automation as a means of destroying one of the central planks of immigrationism.

This was a fascinating convo! Towards the end they get to the heart of the matter: the liberal arts exist to educate us on how to be human. And that’s priceless.

The arguments about why using AI to write is still writing are just so stupid and detached from any understanding of what creativity actually is that I can’t even be bothered to reply to anyone making them.

If you’re using AI to write, why are you even a writer? Like why bother? The pleasure, the pain, the mystery, the magic, the torture and the exhilaration and euphoria on the other side of the torture—it’s all in the process and cannot exist independent of it.

An act. Play at philosophy and art and beauty, but at the end of the day it’s utility.

@BlakeSNeff Fundamentally, it makes more sense to prefer to agriculture to data centers. Perhaps that's because ag is inherently human, while data centers are not.

One can have mixed opinions about AI itself, but the revolt against data centers is a very ugly sign for the U.S. It shows America headed in the direction of Europe, developing the moral sense that any kind of development or economic activity is somehow immoral, so it’s better to just not have such things. The proper response to worries about water is to point out that it is a hysterical lie (data center water use is minuscule compared to agriculture or other industries); the proper response to worries about electricity is to build more power plants as quickly as possible. The end result of this panic will be economic stagnation and domination by foreign powers that choose growth. wsj.com/tech/ai/the-am…
