WSJ reports that when the FM of Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan met in Riyadh to find a diplomatic off-ramp, they couldn’t find an Iranian counterpart to talk with after Israel killed Iran’s national security chief, Ali Larijani.
Egyptian intelligence then quietly opened a channel with Iran’s IRGC and proposed a five-day pause to build trust for a cease-fire. That move paved the way for President Trump to step back from his threatened strikes and embrace diplomacy.
