@sandtorock St. Paul reaffirms it as literal. St. Ignatius, who KNEW and was taught by John, affirms it as literal. These men lived in or close to the time of Christ. I trust they're not getting the Eucharist wrong.

To believe that the Lord's supper is symbolic is to essentially call the Lord a liar.

@BasedDavePA People leaving doesn’t prove it was literal, it proves it was hard to understand. In the same passage, Jesus says “the flesh profits nothing, the words I speak are spirit and life” (John 6:63). That points away from a literal reading, not toward it.

@sandtorock He doubled and tripled down on the flesh and blood thing. Jews who heard this said it was a hard teaching. Some of his followers left him and followed him no longer (John 6:66). That seems over the top if its just symbolic.

@BillArnoldTeach Scripture is God-breathed..that’s where its authority comes from (2 Tim 3:16). The church didn’t create that authority, it recognized it, discerning what was truly from God and what wasn’t. The Word didn’t begin with a council. It was always there.

If authority is the Bible alone, who decided what the Bible is? Be consistent.

The idea that Christ left a Book with no Saints, no Sacraments, and no Church to teach it is low-IQ Protestant nonsense. Jesus didn’t write Scripture. Not one line. He built a Church, gave men authority, instituted Sacraments, and ordered them to teach in His name.
