Today was Persian New Year, Norouz. I woke up, went to work, came back home. Very similar to another normal day. It was a normal day for everyone else at work but for me it felt a lot different. It was the first year I didn’t feel like setting up haft-seen. First year I didn’t even wake up for New Year’s Eve (which is a rotating time and it was 7:45am this year, it’s exactly the last hour of the year). I stay up / wake up early even when it is as late as 3am. This year wasn’t even that late. I’m usually awake at 6:30am every day but today it was as if I wanted to pretend nothing is happening. These days we Iranians are living a double life. Wake up, go to work, be a normal citizen who isn’t distracted, come home, go to bed, open social media, start scrolling, spiral, remember where you’re from, remember you’re terrified for your family, remember you don’t know which one you’re more afraid of: the bombs or the IRGC soldiers with guns who are going around the city making sure no one speaks against the government. Maybe cry a bit. Maybe ask yourself why can’t we have peace in the Middle East, or even simpler: why can’t I call my family for the New Year (fun fact: IRGC has blocked all internet access and inbound international calls for the past three weeks). Then go to bed. Wake up in the morning, go to work, pretend nothing is happening and everything is normal. Repeat. I miss my family. I miss my country. I hope for a free Iran. I hope for freedom. Call me naive, but I'm still appalled at how "international law" wasn't a thing when Iran murdered more than 30,000 people in two days, but it suddenly it's all that matters when the US and Israel are trying to stop it.

The internet in Iran has now been shut down for 84 hours. While I.R. terrorist officials have full access! Restoring connectivity helps information circulate — and information saves civilian lives. The I.R. has always resorted to shutting down the internet when things go south, while embedding military assets in dense civilian areas — increasing the risk to innocent people, so they can blame it on the others!
