I had to walk through my own fire to arrive at this moment. Today, I return to the screen with my friend and National Awarded filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s magnum opus, produced by Aritra Das & Sarbani Mukherjee, portraying one of history’s most extraordinary women, Sister "Nibedita". Born Margaret Elizabeth Noble in Ireland, Sister Nibedita came to India after meeting Swami Vivekananda. She did not merely change countries. She transformed her entire life. She dedicated herself to India, becoming a tireless champion of women’s education, scientific thought, social reform, national awakening, & the preservation of India’s spiritual & cultural heritage. She stood beside India’s freedom movement, encouraged Indian artists & scientists, & devoted herself to empowering generations of women through education & selfless service. In many ways, her journey resonates deeply with my own. Like her, I returned to India after years in Europe, not in search of comfort, but to rebuild. To rediscover purpose. To begin again. While my journey can never be compared with her immense sacrifice, I understand what it means when life strips away everything familiar & asks you to find yourself once more. Perhaps that is why playing Sister Nibedita feels less like performing a role & more like answering a calling. She reminds us that our greatest purpose often begins where certainty ends, & that sometimes we must first be broken before we become the people we were always meant to be. A labour of love. I am writing this letter on behalf of my ailing mother (age 78) who has been a resident of Amherst Street area for last 50 years. She recently went through a severe hip operation and going under treatment. She is bed ridden. We want to draw your attention towards Ward 37, Amherst Street, where a new temple of Shyama Sundari Kali Ma, has been established just four months ago. We have nothing against any religious practices, but the kind of chaos and mayhem the local people and visitors are creating makes it impossible to live in this area. While reconstructing the temple the workers broke lamp shades of private properties. That was just the beginning. Both sides of the lane are illegally blocked by mini vans by byavshai samitee of Baithakkhana, the footpath is occupied by the "bhakts" and the remaining road is blocked by the "puja samagree" sellers. The shoes are thrown on both sides of the road. Lack of public toilet in this area is also becoming a problem of hygiene as people are urinating at any given corner in this lane. Drums, noise, slang, used plates of Prasad, makes this peaceful area look like a crowed mela, with zero management skills. Hired volunteers and security agencies are not trained enough to handle this crowded place. My mother requested me to appeal, so that she can get her peace back, so that she can again walk on pavements and sleep peacefully without any disturbance of sound from temples. While the world is making line for "Ma" Shyama Sundari, I am only appealing for my "Ma" Hope your office will sort this out immediately and restore peace and privacy back in this area.
