A historic event in our neighbourhood. If the talks in Islamabad succeed, we all stand to benefit. Not one Indian journalist there to cover it. But yes, do let’s take pot-shots at it and pray that it fails so that more people are killed, our own farmers run out of fertilisers, our kitchens become dysfunctional without LPG, and we all queue up for petrol and diesel.

We are losing our old friends. Forcibly hugging world leaders is not foreign policy. This government has failed on foreign policy front. —Late Dr. Manmohan Singh ji warned us long ago.

Asked someone from the industry whether foreign investors are still interested in allocating to India. The TLDR: Interest has pretty much died out. India is seen as geopolitically exposed, especially to an oil shock. There are no real AI plays. Valuations are rich. And the rupee situation doesn't help. On top of that, investors who were sitting on gains have taken money off the table and are now looking at markets like Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Europe etc instead. He also pointed out that our LTCG/STCG structure and the increase in STT have made India less attractive compared to other markets that are seeing inflows. If we need to attract FPIs back, and we do, fixing this feels like pretty low-hanging fruit.

In 2003, a German film crew followed a nomadic family in Mongolia's Gobi Desert. The film, The Story of the Weeping Camel, was nominated for an Oscar. A mother camel had rejected her newborn after a brutal two-day labour. Without her milk, the calf would die. The family knew one option. They sent their two young sons on a journey across the desert to find a musician who could perform a ritual called Hoos, a chanting ceremony passed down for centuries specifically for this moment. The musician came. The ritual was performed. The mother camel wept real tears and turned to her calf for the first time. The film crew had gone to document a way of life. They had no idea they would capture that. UNESCO added the Hoos ritual to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2015, alongside flamenco, the Mediterranean diet, and the art of Neapolitan pizza making.

India’s foreign policy is in shambles. I write for @NH_India The key points are: • Pakistan, once on FATF grey list, globally shamed, now chairs UNSC with 182 votes, India stood with just 2 nations against it. Pakistan sits at Iran war mediation table and was also in post US Afghanistan talks, where India was absent. • On Iran: India has civilisational ties, Chabahar investment, trade route, Afghanistan centric alliance and was Iran’s largest oil buyer. Yet during the US-Israel war on Iran, India didn’t say “ceasefire” once. The world reads it as a client state’s compliance. • Afghanistan 2021: India invested $3 billion in reconstruction, yet was frozen out of post-withdrawal talks. Pakistan, which harboured the Taliban for 20 years, sat at the table. India did not. • Neighbourhood First policy has delivered a neighbourhood in permanent revolt . • Maldives ejected Indian troops, Bhutan is negotiating directly with China, Bangladesh offered India’s Northeast as China’s gateway. • The Siliguri Corridor (chicken neck) is now overlooked by Chinese infrastructure. Chinese settlements built in Bhutan’s valleys. India unable to reverse any of it. • Foreign policy pendulum: banned Chinese apps post-Galwan, then reversed; embraced Quad, then retreated; defied Western sanctions on Russia, then surrendered to Trump’s tariffs. • Result: Washington extracts compliance without offering alliance. Moscow gives oil, not security. Beijing backs Pakistan in war. Gulf signed defence pact with Islamabad after India’s Gaza silence. • G20, Gulf ties, FTAs? Largely inherited from UPA or reputational, not structural. It took Modi 8 years to sign a single FTA after UPA’s 10+ deals and needed Trump’s tantrums to close EU & UK agreements. • Strategic autonomy has become strategic loneliness. The seat at the high table is lost. Something is very wrong. @INCIndia @kharge @RahulGandhi

BJP celebrated when Indian ships passed through Hormuz last month. “Modi’s silent diplomacy,” they said. One month later; a tanker with 6 lakh barrels of Iranian crude, destination Gujarat, quietly turned around mid-sea. Where is it going? China. The tanker didn’t turn back because of war or blockade. It turned back because Indian refiners CANNOT pay for US-sanctioned ships. Meanwhile China has zero such problem. China took the oil India needed. This is what 7 years of surrendering your foreign policy to Washington looks like. Hormuz was never the problem. Modi’s compromises is.
The Indian Express@IndianExpress

An Eswatini-flagged tanker Ping Shun carrying around 600,000 barrels of Iranian crude, which was on course for Gujarat’s Vadinar port, changed its declared destination to Dongying in China’s Shandong province after nearing the Indian coast, according to ship tracking data. Data from commodity analytics firm Kpler showed the vessel taking a sharp turn south after initially indicating arrival at Vadinar between late Thursday and early Friday. Trade sources cited payment-related issues as a likely reason for the diversion, with sellers reportedly tightening terms and moving away from earlier credit windows. The shift comes amid a temporary sanctions waiver issued by the US on March 21, allowing transactions involving Iranian crude already loaded on vessels to continue till April 19. The crude aboard the tanker was loaded earlier this month at Iran’s Kharg Island facility and is understood to fall under the waiver. While changes in declared destinations are not uncommon in sanctioned oil trade, the vessel’s initial route suggested it was indeed headed for India. It remains unclear which Indian refiner was to receive the cargo.
