Yesterday, I had the privilege of listening to Manu Prakash of Foldscope. Honestly, I went in expecting the usual slides full of jargon and graphs I'd pretend to understand. But I braved the Bengaluru rain and traffic, and I'm so glad I did. After a warm introduction by Prof. Shashidhar of NCBS, Manu took the stage. And for the next 70 minutes, it didn’t feel like a lecture. It felt like a journey. He took us from oceans to forests, from Kalahandi to Chilka, from Monrovia to Assam, and even all the way to the Arctic. Every stop came alive through his photos and stories. He spoke about mosquitoes with the same urgency as diagnostics. He showed how eco-friendly menstrual pads and tiny schools in remote corners of the world can stand alongside one room diagnostic centers that may redefine the future of healthcare. What struck me was how simple yet powerful it all felt. This is frugal science: science that’s democratic, accessible, deeply human. Science that belongs just as much in a village school or a community center as it does in a research lab. Science that sparks curiosity and restores dignity. Through it all, one song kept looping in my head "Tu dhoop hai jham se bikhar, Tu hai nadi o bekhabar…" (That sunlight breaking free, that river flowing unaware of its own reach) that's exactly what Manu’s talk felt like. Thank you, Manu. You reminded us that science isn't only about discovery. It's about wonder, hope, and the power to change lives. @ManuPra18599785 @TeamFoldscope @NCBS_Bangalore @PrakashLab Thanks @SmtSudhaMurty avl & Murty Trust.
