A chillier week to come with potential for unseasonably late and damaging frost. Heavy showers are likely to be widely encountered midweek with these capable of producing hail and thunder. patreon.com/posts/week-ahe…

Can’t believe this was 16 years ago, Tunbridge Wells, Kent on the morning of 18th December 2009. Was usually a 15 minute walk from my house at the time to work, but took a bit longer that morning

The UK is expected to experience its coldest Christmas Day in 5 years (2020) with highs around 5C in London. The European model brings in low dew points from near continent (dry air) and is presenting a cold and sunny day for many. 👍 It will feel colder with a particularly bracing easterly wind in SE.

Merry Christmas. The ICON 12z brings the cold air in during Christmas eve with snow flurries moving into eastern areas. This is perhaps a less likely evolution as things stand, but a plausible one very much on the table ⛄️

The afternoon model runs feels significant. All major det models ignoring Canadian model, including AIFS which has been uninterested are now showing a significant blocking feature to N/NE and rather cold easterly winds in time for Xmas. Confidence on a blocked/colder Christmas-New Year period rising.

A technical white Christmas for parts of SE England on the relatively new AIGFS model. Flurries. It really depends on good northwards orientation of high, if it can cut off far enough north in Scandinavia, we could introduce a cold continental flow from east. The chance of white Christmas has slightly increased but I'd still put around 15% - unusually further south and east with better odds. Not north which will be closer to blocking high.

This is not a forecast by any means - but a quick peak at Christmas Day on the 00z ECM. 👀 Highs of 13-14°C under this setup. Nighttime lows of about 10°C in southern England. 🌡️ Some people might be cooking their Christmas dinner on a BBQ and eating it outdoors on the patio 🎅

A pretty uninspiring outlook continues. Temps remaining well above average both day and night. Rainfall looks to be near average in E so not particularly wet but far from dry. Growing support for something more seasonable near Xmas but a white one currently looks far fetched!

@MartinSLewis @Ed_Miliband I do hope these savings are government mandated to those whom have sensibly chosen a fixed rate to stabilise their costs. It would be unacceptable to only pass savings to variable rate customers... This must be guaranteed.

News. Energy standing charges finally to fall? Delighted the Government (h/t @Ed_Miliband) has listened and is consulting on shifting the Warm Home Discount costs off the standing charge and onto the unit rate. This is exactly the right direction. You can respond to the consultation here: url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/1D9dCBgKgf6m… If implemented, it would remove around £39 a year from the standing charge (roughly split between gas and electricity), starting next April. That timing aligns with the planned reduction in unit rates announced in the Budget (via moving some other policy costs into general taxation). Overall, assuming all else stays equal (which it won’t, as I’ve written before), this means the standing charge should fall, and the unit rate should still fall too, because the added cost from this shift is smaller than the reduction from removing the policy costs. It’s only a baby step, but it’s a step in the right direction. I now hope @ofgem follows this route in its long-term consultation on the future structure of energy bills. The current standing charge is a moral hazard that disincentivises lower usage and keeps bills high for people who use very little energy. Its the biggest single cause of complaint I get about energy bills, by a mile. Paying £300+ a year simply for the facility of having energy is too much. It also penalises older people who don’t use gas in the summer yet still pay for it every day. I’ve pushed on this for years, and it’s good to finally see some (albeit small) movement. So do feed in to the consultation to ensure it happens.

Why is it so unsettled at the moment? A powerful jet stream will continue to drive our weather into next week and may help to rapidly deepen an area of low pressure later on Monday and into Tuesday.

Europe living up to its reputation as the fastest warming continent in early December, most of the continent v. mild early next week, meanwhile eastern N America in the freezer! Despite favourable signals of late (SSW, MJO phase 7, -IOD, eQBO) there's no 'winter' on the horizon

Another day of sunshine and showers. Localised thunderstorms. Enjoying it? 😉 personally as a weather enthusiast makes a change to see varied weather and different cloudscapes. It has been a pretty boring weather year still 3 months to go though.
