John Theodore (Ted) Sanders - September 19, 1941- September 8, 2024 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, John Theodore (Ted) Sanders. We write this to update our many networks while our mother, Beverly, bravely faces the many tasks that accompany such a loss. Our father left a legacy of service to public education and to the betterment of kids and their families. During his distinguished career, he served as a state education chief in three states - Nevada, Illinois, and Ohio. He served as U.S. deputy secretary of education under President George H.W. Bush, president of the Southern Illinois University system, and president of the Education Commission of the States, among numerous educational advisory boards, corporate boards, and consulting firms. His impact on the lives of children across the country is undeniable, and we are so proud of him and his many accomplishments. That said, we recognize him as our first teacher. He was a towering figure in our lives, both literally (standing at 6 feet 8 inches) and figuratively. He shared his heart with us, with his wife of 63 years, with his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren, while very publicly giving his heart also to children who never had the fortune of meeting him. He was a pillar of strength within our family. We take solace in knowing that his passing was sudden, and that it occurred at his favorite place - Angel Fire, NM - with our loving mother by his side. Waiting for a board meeting to start, absolutely love being in a middle school hallway full of student’s hard work and educator’s presence…but this one hit a cord. Read it once … then read it again.

My back to school theme this year for the schools I have been so blessed to keynote is this - create fun, inspire fun, have fun, love fun & never stop having fun. When kids are having fun, when teachers and staff are having fun - learning and academic success will follow. 🍎

This next year is going to be a year of conquering fears, in DC for less than 24 hours to give a women in leadership speech - one I have not quite managed is eating at nice restaurants by myself … took a recommendation and here we are. Such a big girl doing hard things 🙂
