@WicklowZero @RobOHanrahan As an aside, I think language matters and categorising people as pro or anti mask is divisive and unhelpful. Much of the discussion I've seen around masks for children is centred on the impacts vs benefit. Child development experts should be involved in any decisions made.

50,000 school kids not at school this morning, and this after only 1 week. Whether pro or anti mask, super cautious or very relaxed no one wanted schools disrupted to this extent. Where will we be by Oct? @jenhoganjourno @RobOHanrahan

Schools are not major sites of Covid-19 transmission, says Prof Philip Nolan in ‘back to school’ message independent.ie/world-news/cor…

Clear evidence that transmission happens outside schools.
Fergal Bowers@FergalBowers

.@rtenews Niamh O’ Beirne, the HSE lead for Testing & Tracing said that 700 schools have come forward to report a positive Covid-19 case in their setting, since reopening this week. “What it means is that a child contracted Covid-19 in the community and went to school when 1/3

@Orla_Hegarty Philip Nolan has said data from when schools opened and closed showed little or no change in incidence rates of the disease so why even mention school closures Orla?

@GerHerbert1 @Orla_Hegarty Exactly, he also said that the school gates are the most dangerous place for transmission. The classrooms are safe.Orla is using international data which pales in comparison to the data used by Philip Nolan. We don't need international evidence, our own data shows schools are safe

So school closures are the solution? The plan is that 90% of adults will be vaccinated by September but the best we can do is continually damage kids by disrupting their education, seriously?
Orla Hegarty@Orla_Hegarty

Closing education is ~the most effective~ of all interventions to suppress a pandemic. It’s not credible that opening schools has no impact Schools in Ireland were never open in Delta, & schools were never open at current high level of cases >1,500/day

@GerHerbert1 @GininaTeacup1 100% true, Philip Nolan is world class at what he does and people need to respect his expertise. If he says Covid doesn't spread much in schools then it must be true, he has access to all the official data and we need to trust him

@GininaTeacup1 Orla said school closures were the most effective measure yet Philip Nolan has said data from when schools opened and closed showed little or no change in incidence rates of the disease so who is the expert?

@MctinIvor @Maryknowsbees Mary's number 1 goal is to get schools open no matter what. She has been consistent throughout the pandemic, she just wants children in school

@MctinIvor @irl_open @Maryknowsbees Disgraceful comment, Mary advocated for open schools at height of pandemic & she didn't faff about looking for safety measures either. She was one of the few voices out there screaming for schools to stay open. She's not one of the 'close the schools' brigade

@BennyMto @rtenews Spot on Bernard, the schools should have opened with 6000 cases per day but the teachers refused. They are a disgrace. The govt should have opened the schools anyway and called their bluff. Most parents were happy to send their children in at peak of pandemic

@rtenews Plenty of teachers did work from home, plenty didn't and got paid but isn't it great they could work from home. Healthcare/shops had to go in .then teachers refused to work while healthcare/shops still worked. Now they have had the summer off and they are off again.
