Russia has reindustrialized and retrofitted its society for perpetual war. They are teaching children to hate, to die for the motherland, and also how to kill with modern weapons. Only total defeat will destroy this virus, and it begins with victory for Ukraine.

Conservative Judge J. Michael Luttig is warning that Trump is already preparing to rig the 2026 midterms, not by one single scheme but by a whole “buffet of options” to throw the election into chaos. Think about what that menu looks like in plain English: – Flooding the country with lies about “fraud” before a single vote is counted – Trying to get control of voting machines and election administration – Looking for excuses to call out troops under the Insurrection Act to intimidate and suppress Luttig warns that if we don’t defend the system in 2026, we may not get anything resembling a real election in 2028. In other words: this is not a normal midterm. It’s a stress test of whether we still have a functioning democracy at all.

As a USSR nerd, I wanted to comment on the whole “The collapse of the USSR was a tragedy for the average citizen and the US pillaged it” meme that some hardcore lefties switched to when they realized we were onto their real meaning. The USSR was being pillaged from within for a long time before the US showed up with economic experts in 1992 by its’ own most industrious citizens, most of who became oligarchs (yes, this includes you. Mr. Khodorkovsky). Russian economic experts, policymakers, politicians, and so on also willingly participated in every fiscal and economic reform that happened. Do we just give Anatoly Chubais a pass, say “boo hoo he was hoodwinked by those slick Harvard boys”? I don’t like the Jonathan Hay bunch any more than the average russian should, but it was former USSR citizens, russians, who most effectively pillaged and stripped their own countries and dropped those living standards and left old people without pensions. This is precisely what is happening here in the US RIGHT NOW. And when we crumble, sure, the world is more globalized and interconnected but I’m still going to be blaming the Trumps, the Lutnicks, the Kushners, the Witkoffs, the Bessents, the Musks and Zucks and Thiels FAR MORE than I ever would some consultants from Germany and Iran. And yes this is simplified but this is also just twitter. There are SO MANY good books to read about that time in the USSR/russia, go read for more.

@jaanus The graphs posted are so cherry picked. Overall there were declining living standards, brutal repression, and hopeless economic stagnation. Nobody except the few who personally benefited would want that to continue.

You know, the conquest and enslavement of Ukraine -- with its natural and human resources, its geographic position in Europe, its brains, its access to the sea, and its extraordinarily rich breadbasket -- was in the 18th century one of the key factors that enabled tsarist Moscow to proclaim itself the Russian Empire. Through control over Ukraine, it achieved unprecedented power and remained, in its various forms, a scourge of Europe right up to very 1991. Today, looking at these photographs (and this is the Russian oil port of Tuapse burning again tonight) I find myself understanding clearly that the Russian Empire in many ways began with Ukraine, and it is Ukraine that will bury it. And that will be the ultimate act of historical justice for all the centuries of enslavement, Holodomors, savage bloodshed, and isolation from the civilized world.

The question is not if the US gov wants to align with russia, that's now established. The question is why anyone today would look at russia and see compelling reasons to move closer to it. There is only one explanation, and it involves corruption and personal gain.

People who read a lot of books how do you actually retain what you read? I try reading but after 2–3 books, I forget most of it… even powerful lines fade. Like, how do you keep those insights with you and actually apply them later?

The only explanation for the U.S. government lifting sanctions on the russian terrorist state is Trump works for Putin. Americans may care to know why, but it is undeniable Trump is a traitor.
