My latest preprint! We find neuropeptide signaling is necessary for heart development in the tunicate Ciona robusta. Grateful for all the many colleagues who are co-authors on the work as well. Hearts, brains, and nerves! Oh my! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Sharing this op-ed we co-authored with other international postdocs, highlighting the struggle of doing science under an increasingly hostile political climate, while also fighting for fairer working conditions.

How do we stay motivated as we learn, such as when we study for a test? 📝😰 Our new paper, now on biorxiv, suggests that ramping neural activity in the frontal cortex maintains an extended motivational state to help us learn better! 🧵 1/8 shorturl.at/lyGR2

My morning: key card access gone, hmm better send an email, oh I can’t login to Wi-Fi to send an email, hmm better use my phone, no Swarthmore email exists now (!!!!). I remembered it’s the first day my F32 is active. I guess don’t get fellowships at Swarthmore people 🥲😂😅😭

Happy to share that I was awarded the F32 fellowship for my current work in Ciona from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. I feel very fortunate to receive this funding and am grateful for my mentor Bradley Davidson. First f32 at #Swarthmore! #ciona #tunicate #f32 🔬

If anyone wants to help spread the word about @SkypeScientist, it's one of two things we need the most. You can send people to: skypeascientist.com/sign-up.html And feel free to share this flyer with anyone who you think could benefit from our program!

The collapse of twitter has made it much harder to publicize Skype a Scientist (she says on twitter). Very open to any ideas on how to get the word out to teachers about our program. It has to be either free or low-cost (twitter collapsing has also made fundraising harder UGH).

@ADiaz_PhD I’m Hannah Gruner! I’m a developmental cell/molecular biologist interested in neural-mediated organ growth in a simple marine animal (ciona robusta). I use high content imaging, RNA-seq, and gene editing approaches. Intriged by the evolution of the vagus nerve. I love teaching

This watercolor painting is a tribute to the timer that I used during my PhD. It was a simple device, but it was indispensable for my research. I used it to measure time intervals for various laboratory applications, such as bacterial transformation using heat shock. I wanted to capture its colors and shapes in this artwork, as a way of expressing my gratitude to the timer that accompanied me from 2014 to 2017 in Barcelona. Tag a lab mate who often left their timer beeping for too long.

@ShahLabUCLA Haha it’s like that psychology experiment video where you can’t see the guy dressed as a big ape in the middle of a basketball game the first watch, perhaps only psychology nerds are aware of this video though🙃
