@Big12Pokes Correct call here should have been red. He actually committed two red card offenses during this outburst. Ref let him off easy.

@obrien_jonathan Horrid take. Multiple prior instances not even yellows. This is a yellow for me not a straight red based off the run of play. The inconsistency is a massive problem.

I watched this on the BBC, and Jonathan Pearce and his co-commentator (Lucy Ward?) performed serious mental gymnastics to argue that this somehow wasn't worthy of a red card. At one point they said the VAR replays of it should all be at normal speed to make it look less bad.
The Athletic | Football@TheAthleticFC

Folarin Balogun is shown a straight red card for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic. The USA forward's foot catches the ankle of the Bosnia defender as he lands after challenging for a header. Balogun will miss the round of 16 should the USA make it there. Do you think he deserved to be sent off for that challenge?

@StevenE89329713 @Dataracer117 No tackle or challenge here. Both players are going for a 50/50 ball. They get tangled in shoulder to shoulder contact, and Balogun steps on his opponent while trying to get his feet back under him.

Brazilian FIFA referee Rafeal Claus - who gave the US a ridiclous red card today - was accused of match fixing by "irregular red cards" in Brazil's Series A in 2023. Claus had to testify in the investigation, but evaded charges bc of no direct evidence. FIFA stays corrupt AF.

@derBovo Keyword there is “unnecessary”. A flagrant isn’t given for incidental contact.

Crazy how Americans argue and genuinely believe that wasnt a red card and continue to call it a mistake by the referee. "Football will never be big in the US" But If you look at Basketball / the NBA you have the flagrant foul rules: Flagrant 1 is "unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent", while the more serious Flagrant 2 is "unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent. Thats equivalent to yellow/red and intent isnt required either. I guess If you want to see the world being against your team you will find or make up shit for it 💀

@IrishBearsShow @USMNTnuisance For those that watch there have been a load of occasions when this hasn’t been called as well. Typically studs to the ankle only gets a red when it’s recklessly dangerous (a tackle with a lot of force) or clearly intentional.

@USMNTnuisance If you’ve been watching enough football over the last 12 months there’s been a load of occasions where the exact same decision was made. Consistency is a huge issue. But the way it’s started to be officiated this season, there’s been a bunch of reds for the same

@Al_Perring @NobletStrength Yes, but not every play that “endangers an opponent” is considered “serious foul play”. People get head injuries, broken bones, major cuts, etc with contact being considered incidental.

@NobletStrength We need to stop using ai and thinking its accurate. The key here is not excessive force but "endangering the opponent". The ainis right to say landing onto someone is automatically a yellow, but if its also seen as endangering an opponent thats a red.

@scout_iv @Austen @SpoutHandle @loveit2333 No, look closer. Elbow and upper arm on Balos back, and defenders left ass cheek on Balos hip. Moment of contact, Defender bounces right. Defender led with ass/hip check. From behind. Doubly illegal. From that moment all Balo did was try to maintain stride and plant foot.

According to the Laws of the Game a red card via VAR can only be handed out for: * Denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity * Serious foul play/reckless challenge * Violent conduct, biting or spitting * Using offensive, insulting or abusive language No, that wasn't a red.

@scout_iv @R1leyBolton Just for you, here’s the statement from the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, once one of the best referees in the world, someone you’ve probably never heard of probably since you dont watch football: x.com/sage_fcb/statu…
Sage@Sage_FCB

🚨 Pierluigi Collina dismisses comparisons between Lionel Messi's challenge and Folarin Balogun's red card: 🗣“One of the biggest mistakes in football is assuming that two incidents are identical simply because they look similar. Referees are instructed to judge every challenge based on the specific details of that action. In Messi's case, the contact is brief and he immediately withdraws his foot. There is no significant follow-through or excessive force. It may be considered a foul, but that alone does not make it a sending-off offence. Balogun's challenge is different. Whether the contact was intentional or accidental is not the only consideration. The referee must evaluate the point of contact, the force used, the follow-through and, most importantly, whether the challenge endangered the safety of the opponent. Those are the factors that determine whether serious foul play has occurred. Football supporters often compare two incidents from different matches, but referees cannot officiate that way. Every challenge has its own context and must be judged on its own merits under the Laws of the Game. For me, it is entirely possible for both decisions to be correct. Messi's challenge does not automatically deserve a red card simply because another player was sent off for a different incident. The details of each challenge matter, and in this case the level of danger in Balogun's tackle was clearly greater.”

@KentraHagatra Messi’s call wasn’t wrong. While intent doesn’t matter, “serious foul play” doesn’t just mean someone could have got hurt. Otherwise every time studs hit another player or a head injury happens it would be considered a red card.

2. Messi no foul. I’ll give you that Messi should have also received a red. But again… Using a “wrong” (Messi) call to rationalize why another call should be ruled a certain way is ridiculous. Messi’s challenge is a serious foul play offense and should have seen red.

I personally don’t understand the two arguments on the Balogun red card… 1. Lack of intent. Intent isn’t a factor for serious foul play offenses so why does that matter? Saying it’s an accident and it shouldn’t be a red card makes no sense. (cont.) #USMNT #FIFAWorldCup

Non soccer fans not understanding what is and isn't a card is always the most frustrating part of every World Cup cycle. It sucks for Balogun since it was clearly accidental, but it was definitely a red card.
Grant Paulsen@GrantPaulsen

So I’m not going to pretend to be a soccer expert. That red card seems asinine. That was not malicious or purposeful? 11 on 29 for 30 minutes plus he is out for the next game if you somehow hang on? That seems like a death sentence for speeding. Am I crazy? This is nuts.

@burritobritoboy @lipevieira i’ll take the belgium vs senegal match as an example. the penalty that happened in overtime wasn’t intentional, the senegal player tried to clear the ball and commited the foul kicking the support feet of the belgium player, even being accidental it’s still a foul

@PrplHddWrrr @Austen @SpoutHandle @loveit2333 Agree with your first point. Balogun’s actions were a normal action and would not constitute serious foul play. But your second point is off. A “hip check” is never a foul, that is allowable contact.

@Austen @SpoutHandle @loveit2333 Can it even be “serious foul play” if Balo didnt “challenge”for ball? Balo was fouled, from behind (right rear quarter), by illegal hip/ass check of Defender, who initiated the contact. No call. Defender now in front. Balo tries to plant foot. Steps on defender. BFD. Play on.

@CanMNTonly 2 isn’t true at all. Endangering an opponent isn’t the only consideration or this would have been a red earlier this year. This was deemed to be part of a natural football action and just an unfortunate accident.

This is insane to me! By sheer virtue of having his account you would think this clown would know anything about football. 1- YOU CANNOT APPEAL RED CARDS IN THE WORLD CUP! 2- Intent does NOT matter. If a player's foul endangers an opponent it is a red card, every time that Leo Messi is not involved. #USMNT #WorldCup2026

@Ednargekim117 @brentonhcooper Because there was no intention to commit a foul and no recklessness in the action either. There was far more reckless and far more intentional fouls in this game alone. Ejection/suspensions shouldn’t be up to random chance of where you step.
